Rafa was right to leave Alonso at home. Even if he had gone Alonso's mind would not be 100% on the game so the best and right thing was to leave him behind. Good luck Alonso hope the birth and baby will be fine.

Im a big fan of Benitez however i think this time his judgement is too harsh. Alonso has been one of the few great foriegn signings and a star for us. Any father would want to be present for the birth of his child and i cant see why he couldnt meet up with the team when everyting was ok. I think common sense should have prevailed here

What manager in the world would play a player in one of the biggest games of the year, when the player was not able to train with the team leading up to the game? Especially in this situation where Xabi should stay with his new son. If Torres himself had been away from the team during this time, I would not expect anything better than to start on the bench... and Torres is the MAN! Xabi is great, but they will do just fine without. Get off Rafa's back. He did what he is supposed to do.

Benitez was absolutely right to leave Alonso behind. If he wasn't fully prepared for the game then he might not play the game on full form and make no mistakes, tonight we need every player to play to their full potential to go through, 2 goal lead or not.

Exactly what the first post said :D. All the chat about Benitez being annoyed etc is pure speculation - at least I have yet to see one quote supporting it. We have Mascherano and while it would be nice for Alonso to be there, this is one of the many reasons we have a squad. Alonso will be back and focused to give Masch a break soon and I hope everything goes well for Alonso and family :)

i think rafa was right to leave him out of the squad, but i dont mean that to reflect badly on alonso, if i was alonso i would have done the same the birth of your child is not something to be missed, however i think benitez is right too he has a big squad with for excellent centre mids its not a great problem missing alonso when we have gerrard lucas and mascherano, this is common sense to me not will he wont he benitez not knowing exactly who will play etc. this way it is much more black and white, good luck to alonso and his wife and good luck rafa and the boys tonight!
KUYT IS ONE CRAP B*ST*RD! WHY THE F*CK DOES RAFA PICK HIM IS BEYOND ME!!! IVE LOST COUNT THE AMOUNT OF TIMES HE GAVE AWAY THE BALL IN THE FIRST HALF!!!
Yes your right redhot, Babel had a dreadfull game, it was as if he had two left feet, Kuyt wasnt much better his final ball was dreadfull as well.I didn't like seeing Jamie Carragher out of position either, there were some very good displays from Mascherano, Sktel, Gerrard, Reinna, Gerrard and Torres.
A superb result againsts Italy's best.
Great win in the San Siro. Kuyt was his usual shit and we have to learn to pass the ball properly under pressure but to win in the San Siro is a GREAT achievement.
Benitez deserves great credit for the results in Europe. We aren't in the same class as the Liverpool sides that dominated Europe and played much better football but we get great results in Europe with Benitez and he deserves great credit for that. It's easy to underestimate how hard it is at that level to get results so he earns his money there no doubt.
i think he is a great player. he might not score goals like an average striker does, but he does things for the benefit of the team. at moment when he was given an open shot, he gave it to his teammates to score. i dun knoe but i think we should try our very best to retain his services.

I actualy think Kuyt played better than Babel on this occasion.
