But for me he doesn't get in ahead of other forwards like Ian Rush (346 goals), Roger Hunt (Record league goals, 245). All the ex-player and experts rate Fowler up there with Rush, he was just born 15 years too late. Owen doesn't get anywhere near Keegan, Rush, Hunt or Fowler. Billy Liddell is one of my favourites, I love reading the stories about him. He scored 229 goals in 537 games and mostly from midfield. He signed as a teenager before the war got drafted and came back to to play for Liverpool til the start of the Shankly era. Stuck with the club in the 50's though we were in the 2nd division and retired in 1961. All while working as an accountant.

Thats how it seems to be heading unfortunately..yeah u are right...i'm afraid to of their squad and the chances for us to win the title, coz they already had a squad of goalscoring midfielders, now adding nani, anderson to this...and if Tevez go there they'll become a monster which will frighten all small teams...remember...the league is over 38 games, it not just depend we beat them or not...but if they beat all those lowly teams and we lose some of them like last season then we are doomed...They've also get Hargreaves who is an excellent defending midfielder...
What do we have???
Torres, Gerrard..thats all!!!
And now instead of going for Quaresma or Mancini..Benitez seems more interested in Benayoun..Do u guys think Benayoun is comparable to Ronaldo, Nani, tevez...!!!!
The way they are getting Tevez we could have got him the same way, pay nothing now..take him on loan, then pay after 2 years..What the hell is Benitez waiting to offer a better package!!!!
I agree they build their team slowly..but lfc simply don't appear to build the team slowly..they are building it Very very very slowly!!!
Do u guys think the Americans are really providing enough money???
Coz we are already making 4 mil for luis, 7 mil for cisse, 8 mil for bellamy..so did the money for torres really came from their pockets??? Where is the usual fund that was promise to buy new players then???
You have made a very good point criticalmind I have been thinking the same thing. Have the yanks really stumped up the cash? if we sell bellamy / cisse/ add the money from Luis / sinama and youve got 20 - 22m dedust 23m for torres 5m for the brazilian, technicly weve spent around 6-8m. The Mans on the other hand have spent 65-70m .

If ManUre got 21.3 million from their run into the Champions league, then How much did Lverpool got?????
And where the hell is that money????
If they can pay 20 million for an unknown player like nani, why the hell can't we pay the same for a player of great quality like Quaresma!!!!
I still don't want Benayoun in the squad, we already have pennant who showed he is adapting very well in the team if we got another shitty winger Benitez will start his rotation and Pennant might lost his prolific form..Besides if liverpool is really interested in Quaresma then why is Rafa still interested in Benayoun???
May be he is a Workhorse like Kuyt..or he can keep passing the ball like Alonso, even if he send the ball back to our keeper instead of creating chances forward, it don't matter :)))

I agree that the mancs look to have a world class side, they did last season, but they were lucky to win against us and we played sublime when we beat the Arses. That was without the strengthening we have had now or will have when the season starts, I don't think Rafa is going to settle for just Torres, we'll get a winger and a defender as well. Rafa has also bought a helava lot of youngsters as well, shows he's planning for the future, he's been doing that since he signed on the job, so I would expect to see some anfield trained talent coming through soon. At the end of the day Rafa has out-thought Fergie and Mournalot over the last couple of years, since nobody including us fans know who's going to play on the day, Rafa has surely bought to overcome the lost games of last season. It is teams like spurs, aston villa and maybe west ham that have me worried, they are spending just as big as the mancs and it is those teams that we need to get points off. We need a good start, the last two season starts have been pathetic, people talk of the mancs winning by 21 points ahead of us, but we forfeited that amount by our poor start, likewise the year before.
Submitted by Criticalmind on Sat, 2007-07-07 10:46.
I'm not talking about us not beating ManUre...For sure we can beat them with some luck..But its about them frightening the other small teams with their squad, what do we have..when smaller teams will see liverpool, they'll just see Gerrard and Torres...Manu get 21 points above us coz they beat those teams..while we lost against them...we already got the hint from Benitez that he gonna rotate once agin, hope he do it right this time and don't got us a bad start again..And we really need some goalscoring midfielders..and Rafa need to sacrifice his ego for alonso at times..bay playing gerrard and another defensive midfielder, then using two wingers...Fergie said last season, The Best defence is to attack and score..we should adopt that option we also!!!
This guy scores about 1 in every 10 games he plays, hardly a goalscoring midfielder. He is really just another very average player so whats the point of us signing him?
Dont want him either mate waste of money would of prefered keeping gonzo than him should put money towards SWP and QUARESMA they be perfect to challenge KEWELL and PENNANT
mancini is the way forward
what a player anyone who reads this go to youtube and put in
mancini and have a look u will
be impressed also this player
called ricardo quaresma from porto
not heard of him b must be good
if rafa wants him and i think
we missed out big time on tevez
and malouda nevermind the
premiership is coming back to
where it should be anfield come on
u reds!
i agree mancini ,is the way forward.superb player.but if i had a choice it would quaresma because he is younger. but in a ideal world we need them both.
i agree mancini ,is the way forward.superb player.but if i had a choice it would quaresma because he is younger. but in a ideal world we need them both.
I'll be really disappointed if we go into the season with only Torres as our main striker. Everyone in the football world knows that Kuyt and Crouch are bench warmers at a top side and the odds are heavily against Veronin being good enough for Liverpool. It's all good and well people saying give him a chance but his career statistics show a 27 year old player who never played for a big club and has scored less than 10 international goals. You don't normally see players like that join huge clubs desperate for a league title, especially not when Liverpool so badly need proven quality strikers. If he played for Bayern or Dortmund you might expect more but his CV is Germany is with mediocre clubs. Clearly he isn't going to inspire much optimism among realistic fans who have seen much better strikers fail at Anfield.
We will really struggle for goals this season and draw a lot of games if Benitez doesn't open his eyes and sign a class finisher. It's about QUALITY not quantity; yes we have 4 strikers but only one of them has any class. The other three are 2nd/3rd rate by the highest standards yet we somehow imagine they'll still score us the goals to beat Utd and Chelski to the title. It's blind faith is inferior strikers is what it is.
Utd go and pay nearly 30 million for Tevez to play ALONG WITH Rooney yet we expect a free transfer striker to somehow blossom into a world beater, a beanpole to become prolific and a workhorse mule to become a lethal stallion. And we wonder why we haven't challenged for the league for so long? Ferguson knows that you need quality strikers to win the title; it's tme Rafa opened his eyes and got Anelka or Owen in the door asap.
absolutely agree with you rouman this boy looks brilliant if i had the money id buy him and give him to liverpool but unfortunately im back working in the rain tomorrow cause my rents due next week oh well.
seriously tho he would set liverpool alive with his sheer class and will to win just hope rafa makes it his mission to get him like he did with torres

Torres was spanish, and rafa succeeded in convincing him to come..but For quaresma its gonna be dificult negotiations ahead, already Benitez showed signs that he want Benayoun a crappy player rather than quaresma..hope he change his mind..anyway the price they are asking is not so enormous..Where are the funds???
We need him in the squad more than ever now that we don't have garcia anymore..we need some proven classy midfielder with quality and stylish football.
Lets keep hoping...and especially we shoul be hoping that this matter don't end up like it's been happening for Simao since 3-4 years!!!
Ive been raving about this guy, he will cost but if he adapts to the Premiership he will take it by storm. He is a real showman, very classy, I reckon he will cost 15m.Only cause for concern is he didn't really make it at Bercalona, but he's light years ahead of our current wing options.
Mancini looks another good winger, instead of spending on bennyoun lets get both.
I really hope we land Quersma because he is the difference between challenging for the tittle and just settling for champs league qualification. If reports are to be believed then we've made a bid and simply have to up our offer to nearer their asking price. The only hitch I can see is that Atletico Madrid were certs to land him as recent as 2 weeks ago and they are hardly a big team. I'm surprised Chavski Manure and assnal haven't been in for him and thats gotta make u wonder. He's long been dogged by rumors about his mentality in that he is supposedly a ver arrogant player etc ... if thats the case Rafa may not be looking at him and the more likely option Simoa who lets face it will never set the prem a light. I think Yossi coming in will be a good signing as he can fill the role left by garcia and he's consistent. Cast your mind back to the final in cardif when he was a horrible bastard for our defense to play against. If we land Mancini, yossi and Quersama then in my opinon Raffa will have had a sufficient transfer budget to compete at the top end .. if not
we need quersma, because we need flair. the mancs have ronaldo they donot need him. yes he does have a bit of a repertion, but most gifted players do.he is a player we have needed for ages,i recon he will give ronaldo a run for his money, mancini is another. even vincente thease are the players we NEED to move on.

Quaresma is sheer quality, and the kind of player we need if we are going to put up a serious title shot this season. Benayoun is a good player but if we want to challenge for the title we need GREAT players like Quaresma.
Im really surprised Castillo hasnt been mentioned on here as a possible winger to buy. Ive been watching him in Copa America and he got 5 goals already, one of them a blinder against Brazil. Hes only 23, plays for Olympiacos of Greece where he has 30 goals in 105 games, not bad. Check him out on you tube, hes got some skills too.
I'm sick of this crap im hearing about buying for the future. Why cant we adopt Fergies style by buying for the future but buying for now also, take Nani and Anderson, they're young, will no doubt get better and score plenty of goals in the years to come but they'll do some damage now also!Weve bought 6 or 7 teenagers who will spend the next 2-3 years playing for the reserves.
As for Benayoun, another waste of money,Lets note the fact that the last time this guy touched silver was when West Ham got back into the Prem, will the next trophy he lifts be the premiership itself?Highly doubtful
And finally as for spending money on top quality wingers like Quaresma or Mancini, its money well spent, even if they dont bring us the premiership at least theyll make the way we play better on the eye,the last few years have been terrible for a spectator,we're too defensive and lack flair,so for the benefit of everyone, splash the cash on class wingers!!!!!

Thats all that we see in liverpool, nothing spectacular..just defending , no counter attack..lazy players instead of sending the ball forward they send it back to the keeper..We lack creativity..we are so defensive...while other teams keep attacking to have the best chance all we do is defend and pass the ball and wait for gerrard to shoot from distance..thats the mere reality mate.
We need players like quaresma, mancini NOT Benayous
I have got to agree with CRITICALMIND, Liverpools tactics have become very negative. We really struggle to break teams down at home because we don't have any players with flair ( the one that we had Luis Garcia has been sold ). How many of our players are capable of producing something from nothing ? something different ? Gerrard, Kewell.
As for away from home , we seem all to ofton content to settle for a draw We are in desparate need of players that can take people on in or around the edge of the box.QUARESMA IS ONE SUCH PLAYER.Id want to see us really take the game to the opposition week in week out.
There's no denying we have been too negative the last few years. It's all good and well defending against the likes of Barcelona and Chelsea and waiting for their mistakes before you counter attack, but against poor Premiership sides you have to exploit their weaknesses from the first minute and punish them by attacking them.
Benitez once made a comment I think highlights his mentality as a manager. He said there's two ways of controlling a game; one is by possession and the other is by organising your team perfectly without the ball and waiting to pounce when you finally do get it.
Like a game of chess really.
It seems a strange mentality that you are controlling a game without the actual football. And if you watch Liverpool in possession they never look inventive or technically stylish.
Benitez needs to learn to work more on ball possession and what to do with the ball in the opposing half, not always giving the ball to the opposition and remaining organised. It's clear this is his primary objective as a manager and has brought him trophies, but to win the Premiership, and to make Liverpool a truly great team, you have to vastly improve how the team play in POSSESSION OF THE FOOTBALL.
iam lucky i seen liverpool , play great football. with great players, 60s,70s 8os up to 90. pass and move they klled spurs think 9;0 destroyed notts forest 5;0 and thats when forest were top class.when i went to anfield then it was not if we win, but by how many. i noticed all the best liverpool sides picked on this site no one included ray kenendy. he was superb,i would allways have him in my team i seen him play so many games and he was magic, could pass, tackle. shoot, and score.in my all time 11 easy. but to play that type of football you require skill full players , like quaresma. or mancini. you also have to take risks and at home we should allways win be postive not negative make the teams fear you, not the otherway around. oh for a peter thompson now he makes ronaldo look poor.so rafa please mancini or quaresma or both, no one else will do.
Exactly right ROUMAN we really should be going for these teams when they come to Anfield SCARE THE SHIT OUT OF THEM. Great to hear you mention Peter Thompson I'm old enough to remember him what a great winger he was, Ray Kennady as well absolute class. OK some teams come to Anfield to defend in numbers but if your good enough you will break these defence down and the only way to do that is to have the flair players who can take them on and do the unusual. We have been crying out for some decent wingplay for far too long.
spot on PUNCHY im sick off rafa saying he buying 4 the future we need them now look at NANI,ANDERSON of man u there 19 and they will be going straight in there team 4 the coming season and we buy some kids from a hungarian team that will spend 2-3 yrs in the reserves and never play a first team game the liverpool.i like the look of that besian idrizaj that scored a hatrick against wrexham on the weekend what u think on this subject?
According to several sports news broadcasters LFC have bid 10 million euro for Ajax star Ryan Babel. He can play up front or on either wing. Saw him in the under 21 championships and he looked really good. But he claimed after the final that he was signing for Arsenal next summer.
i saw him as well and i think he will become a real good player. but we need a finished product now. to be able to challenge the mancs and chelski, mancini, or qauesrma. or better both of them. i would not mind him as well but not instead of.

ARE THE YANKS REALLY PROVIDING THE CASH
You have made a very good point criticalmind I have been thinking the same thing. Have the yanks really stumped up the cash? if we sell bellamy / cisse/ add the money from Luis / sinama and youve got 20 - 22m dedust 23m for torres 5m for the brazilian, technicly weve spent around 6-8m. The Mans on the other hand have spent 65-70m .
Where's the Champions league money????
MANU are going to be beatable - we need a good start most of all
I agree that the mancs look to have a world class side, they did last season, but they were lucky to win against us and we played sublime when we beat the Arses.
Its 38 games...
Bennyoun
This guy scores about 1 in every 10 games he plays, hardly a goalscoring midfielder. He is really just another very average player so whats the point of us signing him?
benayoun
Dont want him either mate waste of money would of prefered keeping gonzo than him should put money towards SWP and QUARESMA they be perfect to challenge KEWELL and PENNANT
Best ever LIVERPOOL team

Sign Owen, Anelka or even Defoe
Ferguson knows that you need quality strikers to win the title; it's tme Rafa opened his eyes and got Anelka or Owen in the door asap.
quaresma
i hope we sign him he s what we need. or mancini come on rafa get one of them.
quaresma
absolutely agree with you rouman this boy looks brilliant if i had the money id buy him and give him to liverpool but unfortunately im back working in the rain tomorrow cause my rents due next week oh well.
seriously tho he would set liverpool alive with his sheer class and will to win just hope rafa makes it his mission to get him like he did with torres
lfc till i die!!!!
Quaresma is no spanish...
QUARESMA
Ive been raving about this guy, he will cost but if he adapts to the Premiership he will take it by storm. He is a real showman, very classy, I reckon he will cost 15m.Only cause for concern is he didn't really make it at Bercalona, but he's light years ahead of our current wing options.
Mancini looks another good winger, instead of spending on bennyoun lets get both.
fingers crossed
If we land Mancini, yossi and Quersama then in my opinon Raffa will have had a sufficient transfer budget to compete at the top end .. if not
the need.
we need quersma, because we need flair. the mancs have ronaldo they donot need him. yes he does have a bit of a repertion, but most gifted players do.he is a player we have needed for ages,i recon he will give ronaldo a run for his money, mancini is another. even vincente thease are the players we NEED to move on.
Quaremsa
Quaresma is sheer quality, and the kind of player we need if we are going to put up a serious title shot this season. Benayoun is a good player but if we want to challenge for the title we need GREAT players like Quaresma.
Castillo
Im really surprised Castillo hasnt been mentioned on here as a possible winger to buy. Ive been watching him in Copa America and he got 5 goals already, one of them a blinder against Brazil. Hes only 23, plays for Olympiacos of Greece where he has 30 goals in 105 games, not bad. Check him out on you tube, hes got some skills too.
New Players
I'm sick of this crap im hearing about buying for the future. Why cant we adopt Fergies style by buying for the future but buying for now also, take Nani and Anderson, they're young, will no doubt get better and score plenty of goals in the years to come but they'll do some damage now also!Weve bought 6 or 7 teenagers who will spend the next 2-3 years playing for the reserves.
As for Benayoun, another waste of money,Lets note the fact that the last time this guy touched silver was when West Ham got back into the Prem, will the next trophy he lifts be the premiership itself?Highly doubtful
And finally as for spending money on top quality wingers like Quaresma or Mancini, its money well spent, even if they dont bring us the premiership at least theyll make the way we play better on the eye,the last few years have been terrible for a spectator,we're too defensive and lack flair,so for the benefit of everyone, splash the cash on class wingers!!!!!
keep passing the ball....
NEGATIVE TACTICS
I have got to agree with CRITICALMIND, Liverpools tactics have become very negative. We really struggle to break teams down at home because we don't have any players with flair ( the one that we had Luis Garcia has been sold ). How many of our players are capable of producing something from nothing ? something different ? Gerrard, Kewell.
As for away from home , we seem all to ofton content to settle for a draw We are in desparate need of players that can take people on in or around the edge of the box.QUARESMA IS ONE SUCH PLAYER.Id want to see us really take the game to the opposition week in week out.
Tactics much change
It's clear this is his primary objective as a manager and has brought him trophies, but to win the Premiership, and to make Liverpool a truly great team, you have to vastly improve how the team play in POSSESSION OF THE FOOTBALL.
i agree.
iam lucky i seen liverpool , play great football. with great players, 60s,70s 8os up to 90. pass and move they klled spurs think 9;0 destroyed notts forest 5;0 and thats when forest were top class.when i went to anfield then it was not if we win, but by how many. i noticed all the best liverpool sides picked on this site no one included ray kenendy. he was superb,i would allways have him in my team i seen him play so many games and he was magic, could pass, tackle. shoot, and score.in my all time 11 easy. but to play that type of football you require skill full players , like quaresma. or mancini. you also have to take risks and at home we should allways win be postive not negative make the teams fear you, not the otherway around. oh for a peter thompson now he makes ronaldo look poor.so rafa please mancini or quaresma or both, no one else will do.
REALLY GO AT THE OPPOSITION
Exactly right ROUMAN we really should be going for these teams when they come to Anfield SCARE THE SHIT OUT OF THEM. Great to hear you mention Peter Thompson I'm old enough to remember him what a great winger he was, Ray Kennady as well absolute class. OK some teams come to Anfield to defend in numbers but if your good enough you will break these defence down and the only way to do that is to have the flair players who can take them on and do the unusual. We have been crying out for some decent wingplay for far too long.
I AGREE
spot on PUNCHY im sick off rafa saying he buying 4 the future we need them now look at NANI,ANDERSON of man u there 19 and they will be going straight in there team 4 the coming season and we buy some kids from a hungarian team that will spend 2-3 yrs in the reserves and never play a first team game the liverpool.i like the look of that besian idrizaj that scored a hatrick against wrexham on the weekend what u think on this subject?
Babel
According to several sports news broadcasters LFC have bid 10 million euro for Ajax star Ryan Babel. He can play up front or on either wing. Saw him in the under 21 championships and he looked really good. But he claimed after the final that he was signing for Arsenal next summer.
babel.
i saw him as well and i think he will become a real good player. but we need a finished product now. to be able to challenge the mancs and chelski, mancini, or qauesrma. or better both of them. i would not mind him as well but not instead of.
Babel !
i have noticed that and i think he would be good for us as we defo need a wing player. BUT the downer is arsenal are keen. i ope we gt him.
