OWNERS ARE DIFFERENT
As a Canadian, I don't know the reaction the two American owners are getting in Liverpool, but I can tell you that there is a difference between them. The Montreal Canadiens of the NHL (Hockey) are the Liverpool of professional hockey. They have won the most Stanley Cups (league championships) of any NHL team. They have 27. The second place Toronto Maple Leafs have won 11. That shows just how dominant Montreal has been over the decades. Like Liverpool, there is a passion for the Canadiens in Montreal. About 3 years ago, the team was put up for sale. No Montreal businessman came forward to buy the club. The team was struggling. It hadn't won anything since 1993. Finally, an American, George Gillett offered to buy the team. He gave local owners a last chance to come forward, and when they didn't, he bought the fabled Montreal Canadiens. The outrage was immediate. We don't like Americans much here, either. To have an American own a legendary Canadian hockey team was blasphemous. But slowly, over the next few years, Gillett gradually silenced his critics. He kept everything the same. The traditions, the uniform.. everything. He hired a fantastic Manager in Bob Gainey, a former Montreal player who now has a great record as a manager. And then Gillett moved into the background. He let Gainey do his job without any interference. You never heard from or about Gillett. And Gainey has rebuilt the team. Montreal is currently in first place with the regular season almost over. The Canadiens are one of the favourites to win yet another Stanley Cup. I believe George Gillett has been lumped in with Tom Hicks by Liverpool fans and they are two very different owners. Hicks is a typical loud mouth, money grubbing, bombastic, arrogant rich American from Texas. He loves the press and loves to say and do anything. He doesn't care about Liverpool's proud tradition. He just wants to make money. Gillett does know about Liverpool's history and he prefers to personally stay in the background. He prefers to hire good people and let them do their job. Gillett and Hicks didn't even know each other before buying Liverpool. They were put together by business interests. Gillett now knows he should never have partnered with a guy like Hicks. Liverpool fans would be happy with how Gillett ran the club if he owned it alone. I don't know, but I'm not sure Liverpool fans understand the difference between the two men. I think you see them as just one owner. I thought I would offer a different point of view.
us liverpool fans so know what we want & these two clowns are not on our list.we dont even care what they did b4 all we know that they built a stadium & it came crashing down in pieces all they want from lfc is money they have already put lfc in a huge debt some of the money has misteriously dissapeared .for all we know that abt that money could have gone to their own business in the US.
Allthough what you say may well be true, the reality is that us fans have been let down badly by Hicks & Gillet. They have broken promises after promises, We are still no further forward with the proposed new stadium and have been saddled with debt at a cost of 30m in yearly repayments alone ( if newspaper reports are to be believed ), Hicks and Gillet have no credability as a result.
At least Gillet is trying to do the right thing which is sell up and leave ( so be it with a tasty profit to beet ), Hicks is as you say a loud mouthed publicity seeking greedy bastard,who cant seem to accept the he is under financed and out of his depth, he wont do the hounerable thing ( sell to dic ) because his ego and greed has got the best of him.
That said Liverpool were poorly advised to sell to them in the first place.
when the yanks 1st took over, the spokesman was George Gillet, he said all the right things about the proud history and traditions of our club and fans, he seemed to be a genuine person and the future looked good. we all hoped for a similar outcome to that described by canleaf at the Montreal Canadiens. But then Tom Hicks opened his mouth. you could see straight away this was a typical Big Mouthed Arrogant Texas Twat! It was down to Hicks that Rafa was put under pressure (sounding out Klinsmman, who isnt even a proven club boss) then out comes a vid of him saying "money will not be taken from the Texas Rangers to finance Liverpool, if anything it will be the other way round",(cheeky bastard)! And as Liverpool FC and its fans were finding out what a complete cunt this bloke is, so sadly was poor George Gillet. I still believe like canleaf said that GG is a genuine and honest bloke, and hope if possible that he can buy out the Arrogant Greedy Twat! before sorting our clubs future once and for all, by running it propely or selling to DIC. Trouble is GG has been tarred with the same brush as that fuckin' horrible greedy texas twat!
