Somebody Help Me Understand
As a Canadian, I must be missing something in the English way of being a fan. My parents are from Liverpool and I have been a fan for more than 40 years, but I'm obviously missing something. Owners are supposed to supply money for the manager to buy players. The American owners have done this. Rafa has spent hordes of cash to buy players. A manager is supposed to figure out his best team and then put it on the field. He's supposed to use those expensive players to win. Here's where it gets muddled for me. The American owners have supplied money but fans hurled so much abuse at them during a recent game at Anfield that reporters say it wouldn't be safe for Hicks and Gilette to sit in the directors' box any more. As for Benitez, he has fiddled and faffed around with his team so much that it doesn't play well. The players have no chemistry together. There's different players every game. He's a failure. But fans love him. They cheer his name at games. I just don't get it. The owners do everything right. The manager does everything wrong, but the fans love him and hate them. I guess things are just different over here.
I disagree that the owners did everything right. They have reneged on many of their promises but at the same time I understand why. These guys are businessmen and for the past year or so, a return on their investment did not appear to be forthcoming. As businessmen, they had the dilemma of having to decide whether to sell now and cut their losses or stay, spend more and gamble on the possibility of LFC turning the corner and returning some profits then sell at the price they want. As businessmen, they decided to stay but rather than risk their own money they gambled by mortgaging the club. That is business.
As for the manager, Benitez came into the club with an impressive resume but failed to deliver. For all we know, he maybe what they say he is but he definitely does not suit the English style of football and in particular LFC. Benitez must be dropped if that gamble is to pay off. The owners know it, Benitez knows it. Its a matter of timing.

There was far less anti-Yank statement when we had just beaten Derby 6-0 and a title challenge looked like a real possibility. The poorer the team have performed, the greater the vitriol against the Americans.
