Arsenal in for Alonso - is this proof that other clubs rate Alonso ahead of Gareth Barry?

After it emerged today that Arsenal are the latest club to be linked with Xabi Alonso, does this mean that Liverpool's rivals rate Alonso better than Gareth Barry?

Barry has been Rafa's number one target this summer, and with Liverpool looking to sell Alonso to fund a move for the Aston Villa man, does this mean the other top 4 clubs do not rate Barry as highly?

Surely if they did, then someone such as Arsene Wenger would not be in for Alonso, they would be going for Gareth Barry too? Wenger is known for his ability to know a talent when he sees one, and turn them into a world class superstar, and Liverpool's number 14 could be the next big signing at the Emirates. Alonso's agent Inaki Ibanez spoke about the possible transfer, saying : "The player knows about this subject and now the decision lies with Liverpool,"

To sell one of our best players to one of our main rivals would be suicidal, Barry has been at Villa for 10 years, if another team thought he was good enough, would he not have moved ages ago?

Arsenal fans (myself

Arsenal fans (myself included) I can safely say do on the whole rate Alonso more highly. But he's not very good defensively, which is why I think Benitez wants to replace him with Barry, and why I severely doubt Wenger intends to partner him with Cesc in our midfield.
