Time to give up on Gareth Barry?

After 3 bids have been turned down by Aston Villa for Gareth Barry, is it time to move on to a different target?
Villa are trying to hold Liverpool to ransom over their captain, having turned down an offer of £15million last week for the England International; and are rumoured to be holding out for up to £20million for him.
Liverpool's financial problems have been well documented, but with the expected sales of Xabi Alonso and Peter Crouch, Liverpool will have money to spend, but why should a large bulk of it go on a player who has been at a middle table club for 10 years? if he was that good surely someone else would have snapped him up by now?
Don't get me wrong, if he signs i hope he does well for us, but i dont see him as a better player than Alonso in any way, i think the fee Villa are asking is far too high, this sort of money could be going towards David Villa, or another striker if Crouch is going, rather than spending close to £20million on a player we don't actually need.
Barry had a good season with Villa last term, getting 9 goals in 37 appearances, but where would he fit into Rafa's system? He is not young, he is now 27 years of age, we paid around £18million for Javier Mascherano aged 23, and what a signing he has proven to have been. How can Villa say that Gareth Barry is on par with Mascherano in terms of transfer fees?
I think it is time we gave up on Barry, and went for a player to start alongside Torres, or can at least provide quality backup for our top goalscorer.

i like the idea of replacing Alonso with Barry, but not because he's a better player. Rather, he would provide the extra bite and energy we need in midfield for the domestic games.
But there is no way we should be forking out more than 15 million pounds for him.
Leave the last offer on the table and let Villa choose to take it or have a disgruntled player on their books then lose him on a Bosman in two years.

Yes it's really time to give up on Barry, He's not a bad player, he played well with Stevie for England but would that work in the Liverpool team? Age is also not on his side, So 7 to 8 mill would be a fair price but not Martin O'Neill's over-inflated estimation.

I totally agree that we should not be paying over the odds for the lad, he wants to go and Villa by all rights should allow him to go for a reasonable sum rather than holding us to ransom. I say go for Lassana Diarra as part of the Crouch deal and go all out for David Villa or Silva from Valencia - thats where we really need strengthening. YNWA In Rafa we trust

There is only one prediction for next season . If the ridiculous circus of squandering nearly £20M on a second rate player like Barry is allowed to continue then be prepared for another long fight to make 3rd or 4th in the Premiership ( if that!) . Rafa is being conned along by MON to waste money .

I think you are spot on! what a saga for just one player. I think Rafa should look somewhere else and I hope he does. I guess he's trying to get as many English players as possible just in case, but come on Villa has taken it too far. The player wants to leave and I wonder what will happen if we back out and no one comes for him? If that situation occurs, it will be interesting to see how he'll get on in the squad next season after publicly declaring his desire to join Liverpool FC. Not sure that Martin O'neil has thought that far yet.
In my opinion, I don't think that he's worth more than £10k; he is 27 for God's sake and that's kind of old for a football player!
Alonso is surely better than Barry and also younger, yet Juventus were asked to pay less than what Villa wants for Barry. Ridiculous!

Why do we need another striker?
The team is better with one striker with Gerrard in support. We have Kuyt and Babel who can both partner Torres if Rafa felt like playing 4-4-2, or play up front alone or together is Torres is rested/injured. Barry can also play left midfield in 4-4-2, keeping a strong midfield with Barry-Gerrard-Mascherano-[insert right midfielder].

Totally agree - I am fed up with MoN taking Rafa at ransom. Give away - and if a midfielder is required, why not go for L.Diarra - or Rafael van der Vaert?

I don't think Barry is going to take the reds to another level. Benitez might as well stuck with Alonso even if he did't play well last season. Whether its a straight cash in and out with Alonso/Barry there isn't anyone outthere who i want in central midfield. Benitez does not have the money to buy a great striker now Crouch has gone leaving a striking shortage and does't have winger. Forget Bently and Milner, they are only just above average.
Could this money situation put the reds as also runs in the future or is there a Wenger out there!

Why Barry is a must...
Don't go on newpaper rumours, Liverpool has till now put highest bid of 13 Million NOT 15 million, Barry is the captain of A.Villa with the fighting spirit just like Torres and Gerrard, If gerrard went public to say he want that player at liverpool he definitely has a reason, he feels comfortable while playing with Barry, just think How stable our team gonna be with Mascherano and Barry holding the midfield, Gerrard will has no trouble at all going forward, even in big matches.
And what happens if ever Mascherano is injured or Absent?? Alonso is not a real holding midfielder, neither is Lucas.
How many goal did Alonso scored last season in the premier league, or the previous season when he was fit???
Did Rooney, Mascherano, Tevez, etc..came from middle table teams??? Whats wrong if we get a player from middle table team as long as he is blosomming in an excellent playmaker, just look at the pass he sent for gerrard in the England matches..you'll see my point.
As for the price, why hurry on it?????????????????? No other team are going after Barry, the Transfer season is not yet open, the Euro2008 is not yet finished, so why should Rafa be in a haste??
At least Barry don't just pass the ball backwards to keep possession like Alonso..we need to change that mentality of passsing the ball backwards!!
And finally if we ever miss on Barry who knows what crap we may end up with..Players like Diarra who don't score any goal, Muntari etc...
Barry is a must, we must continue with the 4-2-3-1 formation instead of changing to 4-4-2 and going backwards.

Rooney , Tevez and Mascherano were (and still are ) young players, 24 is the oldest whereas Barry is 27. Most people had heard of Tevez and Mascherano before going to West Ham, Tevez had a good reputation, and Rooney was talked about coming through the Everton ranks for ages before he came onto the scene and scored that screamer against Arsenal.

I saw polls that pool's fan does not like Barry. I don't know much about Barry myself. When Stevie and Rafa wants him then he should a good player. What I like with Barry is the experience he will bring to midfield. To win the league is we need mature player. Barry is at his peak and a proven EPL player. May be Alonso will be a better player when he come to the age of Barry. We have to think about the present now and see which player will be more productive for us right now. I am sure Rafa wants to keep Alonso but this impossible because the US owners is milking us like a cow and we need money.

WE NEED TO SIGN BARRY
Our left hand side has been a problem for two / three seasons now, Riise hasnt played to his best at Left back or Wing back, Aurelio is questionable,Kewell was a disater along with Zenden and Gonzalez, Alonso had one good Season, Thats the reason we need Gareth Barry
He plays well alongside Stevie G, can play at full back if required, and plays a loverly through ball, he score a few and is excellent at free kicks and corners. Also he is allways looking to play the ball forwrd rather than sideways or backwards, at 15m he to my mind is a bargain. The sooner we tie the deal up the better. I can see him becoming a crowd favourite.

Xabi Alonso may be staying put, the Barry fiesco continues to drag on and without the money from Alonso's depature may never happen.
Personally I hope the deal does go through Xabi has done very little at Liverpoool other than in his first Season, if he is going to stay Benitez needs to give him a huge kick up the backside, because he appears to just go through the motions, he has undoubted ability but very rarely uses it , he needs to be far more involved in games, I for one hope he goes.

We are being linked with David Silva, apparently Benitez is pissed off at being asked for inflated fees on Milner and Barry and may turn to Silva who he reckons will go far less than Valencias 20m asking price.

I like Silva and Barry , Silva is younger and if we got him for 15m would be a superb signing.
Equally Barry is worth 15m maximum and would be a good player adding balance and strengh to our left hand side,We need to move this transfer along one way or the other. Milner is a joke, personally I wouldnt pay 2m for a player who has achieved nothing of note, and would struggle to make our first eleven.

I was excited when i heard about it! But i'm wondering if Rafa's jus doin it to pacify us fans? he'll need to sell a lot to get the dough.. And judging by the price he sells at, we probably cud jus afford to get paul gascoigne outta retirement n play for us.. lol..

Silva is a good player. But I don't think he's worth £20m. I doubt he will score too many and he's quite small. I would love us to sign the lad as he has quality but £15m is enough for him like it is for Barry.
Arshavin looked like the type of player we need, creative and technical. But I have doubts about how a Russian player will settle. I can't recall many Russians being stars abroad although if you got Arshavin for £15 I would probably buy him.
However, he is a creative player. I think Benitez would get him on the training ground and be on at him about tracking back and defending until Arshavin was useless with the ball itself, like Alonso.
Benitez wants work more than crrativity, and that's why our football is rigid. So I doubt he will sign a playmaker like Arshavin.

Podolski has done very well Kev J and I have been impressed by him. But I reckon Bayern would want £15 million for him or more and I can't see him scoring too many goals so I wouldn't pay that.
If we gave Bayern Kuyt and got Podolski I would be delighted. I have a feeling Gerrard might take Kuyt's position on the right next season and we might buy a player in behind Torres.
I am reading we are interested in Croatia's Olic. He is a workhorse striker so Benitez probably is excited by him. But he isn't good enough for us.
We need a creative player in the hole where Gerrard played last season. Gerrard isn't a playmaker, he's a goal getter from midfield. We need a Deco type player.
ANY DECENT PLAYER THESE DAYS COSTS 15M-25M
Everyone on this site says he's not worth this and that, but the reality is any half decent player sells for 10m plus, any really good player costs 15-25m, CRAP PLAYERS SELL FOR 5-7M.
Thats why were selling Alonso for 14m and want 15m for Crouch,even though his out of contract next year, equally Barry costs 15m Silva 20M and Villa 25M
To say Barry isnt worth 15m is nonsense he is Captain of his team and a provan International, some of the guys posting on this site need to get real with there valuations , Liverpool are part of a multi million pound industry, without money you stand no chance of achieving and you need to be buying the best players. Money doesnt buy you success but it goes a long way towards it.
Get real and realise that top quality players cost big bickies.
Arshavin was quality tonight
The Russian lad played superb tonight. Best player at the tournament, put the hyped up Ronaldo to shame in this tournament. His price has risen now.
Love to see him sign for us but he wlll be £25 million now and Villa is a better buy for that money. Arshavin in 27 and has only played in Russia so I think he's worth a bet for a club like Madrid who can finacially afford to risk it, I don't think we can with our limited budget and desperation for a title challenge.

this guy has had a excellent euro's so far i can see him being in big demand after the euro's just like his team mate arshavin its going to be a very busy transfer market this summer with all the talent on show rafa needs 2 go to these games himself and have a look coz us fans can spot the talents of a good player but rafa cant or his chief scout! villa,podolski or pavlychenko would be good signings for us to partner torres but we will have to wait and see what happens.
Getting carried away with performances
I have seen this before around international comp times, players emerge from teams we have never heard of and price tags go crazy after a few good games. its all false inflation due to the huge interest at that specific time on the compition.
I no arshavin and silva have been playing well, so to egelar but this happens and doesnt mean they are going to succeed in the prem over a full season.
Example smicer baros play out of this world for the cechs and were two of there best performers over recent yrs, but couldnt cut it with us, they both bought on back of records for national side.
Look at philip lahm and ronaldo quaresma all had below par euro 08, are they shit players?

I like look of silva however he has no right leg, non at all, and better defending by the italians would of realised he cuts in EVERY TIME, wont be long for prem players work it out week in week out. Play him down the left yeah, but babel goes where then? both big money players so need be on somewhere

stulivered ..lahm has been the best wing back in the championship and u saying hes been poor. what is wrong wit u.... and as to silva, we need a player with a good left foot... its alway an asset to any team...messi, van persie,etc. are all good examples.Van der Vaart is another player we shud be looking at..he is also left footed and scores a lot of goals..and silva can play on both flanks as well as behind the striker.. also he will also know torres better as they play for spain together... versatility is not one of quaresma's strong points... he is grossly ovr rated man..both silva and van der vaart are playing in much tougher leagues than quaresma and have estabelished themselves...all these points show clearly that silva and van der vaart are any day better .. i hope we go for silva or Van der Vaart..
Rafa asks for transfer funds
Rafa has been reported to have asked Hicks & Gillet for more money for transfers this Summer, According to The Daily Mirror and Daily Mail he wants to buy David Villa David Silva Daniel Alves And Gareth Barry.To my mind all good players.
We have just got 25m for our Champions League Exploits last year,the Yanks have said Rafa can have 25m to spend plus any money he self generates from outgoing transfers, ( wether he can add the Champions League money is debatable ). Benitez is obviously trying to raise funds from player sales,4.5m allready from Riise, 16m for Alonso 12m for Crouch and may offload Bennyoun Prennant Carson Finnan Guthrie.
It is good to hear that Hicks and Gillet are trying to settle there differences at the top, having our owners at loggerheads is no good for the club, wouldnt it be great if they could see there way to giving Benitez the additional funds. With that type of quality in our Squad surely a title challenge would follow.
So come on Tom and George, you say you have the clubs interests at heart, well give Rafa the money and prove it. Then this famous club of ours can go about doing what it does best winning Football trophies.
If need be why not form a partnership with DIC because wether they like it or not Hicks and Gillet cannot afford the new Stadium, running a club like Liverpool takes massive investment, buy the players , join forces with DIC and watch your investment grow in value, and have a bit of success and a lot of enjoyment along the way.
Rafa has denied asking for those extra funds
Since my previous post, Benitez has denied asking for the additional funds, saying the articles are rubbbish. Bit of a shame to say the least, makes you wonder what we are actuallly doing in the Transfer Market ? Surely there's more to life than Degen and Dossena ?
He has also ruled out going for Daniel Alves stating Barcelona are the team most likely to clinch his signature,

It looks as though Nemeth will be going out on loan with Leeds for next Season. I'm not 100% on this being a good idea, on one hand he will gain a lot of experience, on the other he is such an exciting talent surely he is good enough for our First Team allready,Micheal Owen and Stevie G were at a simular age.I was hoping to see him break into our first team this Season.
Equally Anderson looks to be going out on loan again, surely he is worth looking at in Pre Season as we are crying out for a goal scoring winger.He had an outstanding season with Swansea last year.
Sometimes going on loan can be a bad thing.

my question excatly eddie is rafa all there? there is defo more to life at LFC than degen and dossena rafa needs to get his targets and get on 2 it straight away with the other names going around such as milner,bentley,riera isnt good enough for LFC we need the top names such as villa,silva barry when is the barry deal goin 2 happen if it is coz its dragging on 2 long now im nervous bout next season with us having 2 sell b4 we can buy rafa turned down a bid of 9m from pompey 4 crouch that is a reasonable amount we still make a profit but until we sell who can we afford to buy? at this rate we couldnt afford 2 buy ricky villa let alone david villa!

I agree Rouman things should start happening over the next Two weeks, Martin Oniell comes back from European Championships, and We start back at training Mid July, so I reckon the next Two weeks will be when things start to happen.
At least were being associated with better quality players whilst you've been away,Silva and Villa have a better ring to them than Milner and Downing.
