Liverpool's Dirk Kuyt put in a brilliant performance to help Holland beat Italy 3-0 in the Euro 2008 group stage.
Kuyt was playing on the right in the same position where he has played for most of the season at Anfield, and from the start until the 80 minute he did not stop running, tracking back, making himself available for passes and getting in the way of anything coming his way.
After Pirlo took a corner for Italy, Holland attacked with ferocious pace, Van Bronckhorst crossed a ball in, Kuyt headed it back into the centre for Sneijder to smash the ball past Buffon. Kuyt also set up Van Bronckhorst for the 3rd goal, Bronckhorst ran the length of the field for an attack, sent the ball to Dirk, whose first touch let him down, he got a shot away that was saved, before putting a millimetre perfect cross onto Bronckhorst's head who wrapped up the tie for Holland.

We need to get the Gareth Barry deal finalised, He has made the big decision and publicly declared that he wants to leave Villa after 10 years at the club, he has now said he wants to join us which is what we want to hear. Now we need to tie this deal up once and for all and put it to bed.

I just as die hard red as anyone, I just cant help but get annoyed with all the transfer gossip and speculation knowing full well, as i am sure most of you do that David villa, ricardo quaresma and others arent coming to anfield. Come on surely you can see that to, its about having realistic expectations, sure we can dream and believe me i do feel we can win the prem otherwise i wouldnt fancy us every yr, but on other topics ie transfers we have be realistic, i old enough now to realise this isnt prem league mananger on P.S.2 and i think others should realise that, i enjoy the debate as much as the next man, and when rumours are said i love wondering what if, but where have we been realistically connected to Villa or quaresma, all i hear is downing barry or others, its like the D.I.C bid thats gone cold, nothing gonna happen this season at least but people still thinking it is, i want a realistic debate not what ifs based on money we dont have nor will have this side of 2009-2010 season. Barry is our best bet and a good player, with him and the midfield i stated in my previous comments i believe we can mount a decent challenge, i have never said anything to the contary, but i just cant get excited about players who aint coming.

Watching David Villa and Fernando Torres play upfront together is watching a dream striking partnership,they compliment each others styles and a both deadly in front of goal. Therefore I reckon we should break the bank to get them together at Anfield. Villa will cost 25-30m , if we offload Crouch, Riise,Carson, we would have approx 20m of that fee, we should then break the bank to get Villa at Anfield. Villa is regarded as Spains number one Goalscorer, there would be no risk as it is allready plain to see that the he and Torres link up brilliantly together, between them we would have the most potent strikeforce in the Premiership, and us signing Villa would guarantee us a Premiership Challenge.

Supposedly the Yanks have made £20 million available as free cash so £10 million for Crouch, which Portsmouth has offered, and we can sign David Villa. His wages etc.. will be paid over 4 years not all at once.
The Maths prove we can sign Villa or Quaresma. But Benitez is always looking for quantity so don't be surprised to see £10 million spent on Riera and £10-12 million on Bentley or Wright Phillips.

Well we can certainly improve by buying Barry and Quaresma or David Villa. It may not be enough to win the title but it will be more undeniable steps in the right direction. Buying players like Riera is going round in circles to 4th. You only improve with quality, not mediocre players.
Riera may not be trash, but I hugely doubt he is good enough to improve Liverpool's first 11 over a season. Also Kuyt might be able to be effective (if not pretty) in one off games in Europe, but week in week out it's clear he offers far too little. So we need him to be a regular bench player next season if we're to progress in the league.
Again, this might not happen if we sign dodgy players like Benayoun or Pennant who won't keep Kuyt on the bench. If Robben or Van Persie were fit Kuyt would never have started for Holland; because it's clear as day he is 2nd rate compared to top players - yet he was a regular last season for Liverpool.
So clearly we need improvement in that position.

Why haven't we sold Alonso if we want Barry? If Juventus are offering £13 million then we should take it. Alonso isn't worth anymore than that and no one else will pay even that much if Juve go elsewhere which means we will be stuck with a £13 million player on the bench if we buy Barry.
The same with Crouch. Why hasn't Benitez accepted £10 million from Harry Redknapp? We'll lose Crouch for zero after xmas he can sign a pre contract and there's no doubt Crouch will be on the bench next season if he remains. Why not get rid of him and get the money into our hands to look at other players. Benitez is playing a greedy game and it could backfire beg time. We'll only know at the end of the summer KevJ who we signed and what chances we have. But if he pays £9 for Riera and £10 for Bentley instead of putting all his cash on Quaresma then Benitez has no one to blame but himself if those players fail.
Barry and Quaresma are the two players most fans want and Benitez can sign them both if he wants. If he doesn't his judgement in the market comes into real question once again.

It has been reported that Juventus have decided to look elsewhere re Alonso, if this is the case then its because of our greed nothing else we are holding out for 15m with Juventus having offered 13m.

Selling Alonso Crouch and Risse should be the easy part, getting Barry shouldnt bethat difficult after all he has said he wants to leave, surely all that needs to be done is agree a fee and terms, ok MON is a prick but then so is Rafa for bidding 10m, what chance did he have of buying an England international , Captain and best player for his club for 10m.
Rafa is obviosly trying to make the money he has for players stretch, but top quality players dont come cheap. He needs to wheel and deal, and if he does it efficently we should end up with another two or three good players.
Rather than winge about it get on with it and do it, test the tempreture on Queresma with a 12m bid if they say no go to 15m, if they say no to that switch attention to Villa offer 25m but get in quick before Chelsea and Arsenal. Benitez must have the Spanish contacts to sort that deal out.

Can't see why Villa won't take Pennant or Finnan as part of the deal. But Martin O'Neill is a Derryman and so it is in his nature to be as stubborn as a mule. Rafa should have gone about the deal in a lot quieter and more private way to soften O'Neill up to taking some of our flops. Once it all became public it became a battle of wills. It'll be expensive on us now an I don't think we can afford even 18m on Barry.

Italian papers have said a deal for Alonso has finally been agreed with a fee of 14.2M accepted by Liverpool. Not a bad bit of busines he cost us 10M.
Alonso is a good player but has lost his way since his First Season at the club. I think it is fair to say he never played to his full potential but was a well liked player who rarely let us down.

Van Basten said they were a lot more dangerous 2nd half. Kuyt did well to score but Holland are far better without him in the team passing the ball backwards all the time.
And Liverpool will be a lot better too without him in the team next season. But he's a good bench player with passion and heart, if your first choice players get injured.
