I was proud of our performance last night if the truth was known we lost the tie because of Riise mistake in the first leg, the difference between going to the bridge 1-0 up and 1-1 was huge.

Now we need to reorganise the side, we need to buy top quality players and top quality only.
We also need to clear out all of the not good enoughs.

Out must go - Kewell, Riise, Pennant, Voronin, Alonso, Crouch (if only because Rafa doesnt give him a chance),Kuyt, Carson, and Guthrie .

We then need to bring in two top quality full backs, a top class winger, and two top quality strikers.

We are still a long way away from having a premiership winning team.
But us fans deserve a premiership challenging side, we cannot keep being out of the race by Christmas, frankly that is unacceptable. Rafa needs to buy wisely, better than ever before, that means getting the checkbook out and buying big money top quality signings, no more squad players and players for the future.

well our semi final luck has finnaly ran out against chelsea.
all the lads put up a good and brave performance, but i think the reason that we lost the semi was not because of last night but from the 1st leg at anfield when stevie g played the long corner in the 93rd minute instead of playing the short ball and keeping possession in the chelsea end.
i know in hindsight we all say these things but while at work at listening to it on the radio i was in disbelief at why gerrard chose to hoof it into the penalty box which then in turn led to the equalising goal.

The Drogba thing has been blown out of proportion due to his goals and the fact Chelsea won. I think Skrtel going off was crucial for us especially as he appeared to have the ability to contain the Chelsea forwards a lot better given his presence and pace.I've no complaints about the result - the result was always going to depend on individual errors. Hyypia made 2 (the penalty and allowing Kalou to skip onto his better foot) and Carragher played Anelka onside in the build up to Drogba's 2nd. Chelsea made mistakes too, but they were in less dangerous areas, and when they WERE in dangerous areas, Liverpool didn't make the most of it.

When you look at our first 11 against Chelsea, and see the likes of Kuyt, Arbeloa, Riise and Benayoun, then you have to wonder how hard it is to buy 11 very good players.

I accept Liverpool cannot afford a squad as good as Chelsea and Man U because they are far wealthier. But I don't accept that after 4 years Rafa Benitez could not find a better player than Dirk Kuyt to be in our starting 11 in a European Cup semi-final. Neither do I accept after 4 years he couldn't have found better full backs than Alvaro Arbeloa and John long ball Riise.

If Rafa Benitez had 11 very good, solid and talented players to start in the first 11 then I could accept the reason we haven't even challenged for the league is because we can't afford a big enough squad.

But we don't even have a top class first 11 as was shown last Wednesday night. And I fail to see how after spending 150 million we don't even have 11 top class players when two of our best - Gerrard and Carra - cost Benitez nothing.

I believe Benitez needs to get the first 11 right and then he can worry about the squad. The problem with Benitez is he is utterly OBSESSED with talking about the squad and he ends up having a first 11 that contains players like Dirk Kuyt, a player who wouldn't get near any top class team because he simply isn't good enough. Igor Biscan had great games in Europe too but it didn't mean he was good enough.

Rafa Benitez needs to get his first 11 packed with quality players and then worry about the subs. Patrice Evra didn't cost much and look how good he is. The talent is out there for our budget but Rafa has got as many wrong as right in the transfer market and that's why we are still not near to the title after his 4th season.

I think next year will be different, once the challenge for the League was over yet again, Rafa knew he had to finish in the top 4, so he started picking a settled side, when he did this we went on an unbeaten run, so he realises what needs to be done, its not rocket science is it! The one thing we need if there is to be no clear out and a lack of funds to buy the best is a great team ethic - you will never achieve this by permanent rotation. Some of the players repeatedly mentioned will go - because they are pissed of with the tactics, some of the players need to go because they will never bring the title back home. Some of them will go because Benitez will revolve the door again to hide his failings - Nunez, Kronkamp, Sissoko, Morientes, Bellamy. Benitez has publicly stated this week
1. He will continue with rotation
2. We will need a near perfect season to match Man U, Chelsea.
3. We have put a bid in for Barry
4. Good players have lost form under Benitez
5. The squad is better
Surely he has to learn
1. Nobody agrees with the level of rotation he employs
2. First Liverpool manager to start getting his "excuses" in before the end of the current season.
3. Gareth Barry is a good player but not much else.
4. Alonso was, and is, a class act - poor season - why ?
5. Look at the five year record posted - the squad is medicore.

Players will come and go as always and everyone will have an opinion. This squad was close in most areas, can be close next year but you need a leader who listens - we need a strong motiviator with a the right mental approach for the title. The real answer is to get shut of Benitez. He has failed - why wait 6 more months and another failed season for confirmation.

I totally agree with you 4 points Otleyred, I would add another the strengh of our current squad is not good enough, we do not have enough top quality players, only four player would get into the Man u,Chelsea and Arsenal sides. Gerrard, Torres ,Reinna and Mascherano.
The others are either average or slightly above, or not good enough, players like Kuyt, Pennant, Kewell,Riise, Carson, Aurelio are under achievers and need replacing. Players like Alonso,Babel, Crouch are inconsistant , they play well occasionally.
We remain a long way away from being a Premiership winning team.
All we can do is continue improving, Benitez cannot compete financially with Man Utd and Chelsea, but Wenger has proved that there are good players out there that can be bought,Benitez needs to give some of our youngsters a try, our reserves have a lot of potential, Spearing , Nemeth, Insua, should all be given a chance to shine.

But buying top quality is a priority, if we could get another 3 top class players to make us have 7 top class players as suposed to 4 we would be heading in the right direction.

Anyone who saw him take apart Bayer Leverkeusen in the last round of the UEFA will know how good he is. Also played well when they tore Bayern apart. Would be a cracking signing. Anyone know if he's already going elsewhere? I know there's loads of interest in him. If he's not sorted, get going, Rafa.

The main thing when u play 4-2-3-1 is to have power mid and a good productive winger to support the striker.liverpool have only average winger and this make torres need to react alone so the goal oppurnity slight decrease...

You lot don't seem to understand, you're all going on about needing this forward or that forward, you keep classing Kuyt as a low scoring forward, he's not, he is now a work horse right midfielder (all be it a shit headless chicken)and Rafa loves him. While Rafa insists on playing two holding midfielders he will only play one forward, otherwise Stevie G has to play wide right or wide left, Rafa feels that playing 4-2-3-1 has sorted this problem out and Stevie plays just behind Torres. We could get Ian Rush at his very best and it would only be Torres or Rush, not both! Rafa has got to change his tactics and play Mascherano and Gerrard centre midfield then he could promise Crouch a game and start playing two upfront,then we need one more striker to go with Torres, Crouch and Babel, we do need wide men but come on rizal, Morton Gamst Pedersson is just an aveage player who had a good season with Blackburn a couple of years ago, and Stuart Downing is no where near premiership quality, he only got a game because Boro have had a long succession of crap managers, one of which (McClaren) went on to manage England and had the cheek to pick the useless twat for his country. The best left winger around is Ashley Young at Villa and we've no chance of getting him, but Rafa does need to search and bring quality to the club. as for the new stadium 61,000 is not enough, it should be at least 70,000 with the capability of extending by another 10,000 to 15,000. then we could challenge the mancs and piss them off by having the biggest club ground in the country, as we should!
