Who in our squad can genuinely help us become title contenders?

Liverpool are now 17 points behind Arsenal and Manchester United in the league, a gap far too big to close this season, but who do you think from our current crop of players can help us to glory?
When you look at the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd, their overall squads are alot better than ours. I dont want to criticise the Reds too much, but there is no way some of our players can be classed as being at the same level as the rest.
As much as i hate to say it, Man Utd have the luxury of Ronaldo, Tevez, Vidic, Evra, Hargreaves etc. Arsenal have Adebayor, Van Persie, Fabregas, Hleb, Rosicky, Toure, Clichy, Sagna, Diaby (the list goes on). Chelsea have Drogba, J.Cole, Ballack, Essien, Terry, Cech, Belletti, Anelka.
Looking at these names, our side does not compete. Gerrard, Reina, Torres, Mascherano, maybe Alonso. Who else could be classed as good enough to lift the Premiership? Riise, Aurelio, Pennant, Kewell, Kuyt, Voronin are just a few who are nowhere near good enough. Rafa saw Sissoko was not good enough and sold him, it is time we did the same with the rest. We have a ready made replacement at left back in Emiliano Insua, currently playing for the reserves, but he always consistently plays well, and could do a great job for us down the wing.
Arbeloa, Lucas, Babel and Benayoun are just above average at the moment, but none are the type that can win a game in a blink of an eye are they?
Where do you think we need to improve and get new signings in?

There is a strong core of players.
Reina, Carra, Agger, Arebola, (Finnan is showing signs of age), Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard, Torres.
That's basically it.
I'd include Babel but he needs more experience. He's still only 20. We have lads in the reserves who still haven't played for the first team who are older.
We need a left back, two wingers and a striker.
Top class ones which are gonna cost at least 40m.
Say hi to mid table mediocrity for the next ten years.

He should keep Gerrard, Torres, Mascherano, Reina, Babel, Benayoun, Crouch, Pennant (has potential) and just get rid of the others, use that money to buy a few excellent players. Obviously not all at once, but he should make a start if he wants to turn Liverpool back into a top class side.

Generally have to agree with you. Most of the regulars at Arsenal have been assembled in the space of four seasons, and they are challenging for the title. There is little sign that Benitez has the same ability to spot talent... or should we perhaps be blaming the LFC scouting network? Either way, I don't see enough players showing the potential to become world beaters.
Spotting talent
After we lost to a young Arsenal-team last year, I think it ended 3-6. Benitez told us all that several of the young players playing for Arsenal that day, where players he himself had tried to sign, but the board would'nt give him the money, so Arsenal grabbed them. Benitez honestly could'nt compete with the money Wenger got to buy players for.
I'am sure that if he was given the same amount of money as Wenger and Ferguson then we would have better players.

If your going to submit a statement on what to do, then be realistic, and what has pennant done to justify staying over agger or lucas or alonso. I wouldnt build a midfield around benayoun or pennant. and you have no defenders at all in your selection so your stating we need a complete back four?? Carra and Agger are a good partnership and will serve us well for a couple of yrs to come till jamie retires or moves out to let new blood in.

Its very sad to see liverpool playing so poorly. Its actually a bit humiliating to be honest.
Bottom line is we have got the following players who have an idea to play soccer:Reina,Carragher,Agger,Gerrard,Babel and Leiva(give them a bit of time),Mascherano,Torres.
The rest of the liverpool team should be thrown in the dustbin. The aint worth anything. Players like Alonso,Riise,Aurelio,Kewell,Pennant,Crouch,Kuyt,Veronin are not nearly good enough. We cannot win the league with these types of players.
Did anyone watch the west ham game. Alonso and Kuyt were pathetic, but rafa still choses to play them. It may be another frustrating season.

There are some quality players in our team but the back room staff are not getting them to understand each other.
With a core of Reina, carra, agger, masch, gerrard and Torres then we should compete.
The players are not motivated and have lost confidence.
Teams like Reading and West ham last season proved you don't need a world class player in every position to do well.

About Rafa
I think it is about time for the club owners to startthinking about bringing in new manager to stir the affairs of liverpool if this club is to gain her rightful place as a top class club. Rafa has failed in his bid to establish a winning team and the team does not have a pattern of play. I think Rafa should be sacked or else, we will get the worst result ever in the premier league.

the liverpool team seems to be nowhere near the top 3(ars, man u and chel)....no depth in positions, no match winners except for torres and gerrard....now, honestly take away the goals of the latter and i hate to admit but we would be fighting to stay out of the bottom 4 rather then attempting for that CL spot...

ok here are some player ratings as to date with regards their overall performances:
torres - 8+ brilliant debut season and alreay scored more then he targeted
gerrard - 7 - not an excellent season by any means and for captain fantastic's standards-lacked confidence and consistency
mascherano - 8 - fanastic player and ball winner - every time he was called upon, boy, did he do his job!....hold on to him rafa...
hyppia - 5 - the old man had to replace agger in his absence and did what he could, has definitely seen better days, was never fast but now he is sooooo slow despite being a brilliant reader of the game
carra - what happened to carra these last matches? am i the only one seeing him not being his usual self, always passing back to the keeper or shooting it out for a corner if not he plays the game of hit and hope, never crossing it to any1, you see, the play starts from defence most of the times and if we have nobody who can square it properly upwards we have big issues, he wasnt like that as far as i can recall!
aurelio - moody player - never seen him perform with class despite him being brazilian...not consistent at all...loses confidence extremely easily
arbeloa - still young and new to the premiership, he has showed touches of class and i would play him more often at right back instead of old finny...
finnan - as i said, he is old and lacks speed and consistency...and like carra began to play the hit and hope game, does not know how to make space for himself and square the ball with some proper intent and precision...
riise - rafa did not use him too much this season and he lost his confidence totally, when called upon this campaign, yes, blunder after blunder after blunder occured

alonso - what happened to the guy?
when he first came to liverpool he used to spray passes round the pitch and i considered him the best holding midfielder in the PL..but now loses possession way too easily, could they have studied him out? boq...fact remains, i would stick to mascherano and lucas before him
lucas - having a good season so far and when he came on yesterday proved his mettle....had a brilliant combination with torres and nearly scored twice....he will be a good player, surely!!
babel - very fast and should use his speed more, needs to get to know how to find more space for himself and not lose the ball more often, has a bolt of a shot from both feet and in my opinion should try a few freekicks himself - this guy is going to be a star, needs more focussing on football and time will make him simply unstoppable, he is clever and alert and can definitely make it

benayoun - effective player, for me, nimble, he is the player with the best call control of the team, has a good football brain, and sneaks upon defences well...could do with more physical strength...but i like him
pennant - i could not put a finger on the way this player performs, extremely moody, against ac milan he played really well but again lacks consistency...
kewell....he has definitely seen better days, he became slow and started to lose possession way too quickly....where have those leed days gone arry? boq...out d f'"@in door..
crouchie - play him more often rafa - doesnt he deserve it, sure he can perform better then dirk - his goal vs villa was not enough apparently to cement a place in the starting 11..boq...then what is? a striker's job is to score, right?
kuyt - as i said, played way under par this season, worked hard for the team, had some assists but period....he is too slow for the premiership, should use his right booter more often...
vorronin - seemed to be a star when he first arrived to the premiership, scoring a goal every other game and thought he would fit in well, but again a major disappointment, slow, loses possesion, ill-tempered and not up to liverpool standard
now having said all this what is the problem? the common denominator? confidence? or rather the lack of it = failure = denting our consistency

an analysis of the pool problem
david silva bought for 10m while kuyt can be sold for 11m? dream on. people here are a little optimistic over their transfer prices.
anyway the overriding problem with pool is not the players- its rafa's chronic inability to destroy lesser teams through instilling creative freedom (man utd, arsenal) or a stiffling, killer instinct (chelsea).
at end of kuyt's last season i remember people were backing him to score 20+ league goals for 07/08.
as a man utd fan i cannot believe what some people are suggesting here... did someone want to SELL CARRAGHER? thats like man utd selling vidic. or chelsea selling john terry.
even fabio aurelio was a class act at valencia, but injuries have destroyed his confidence. xabi alonso... remains one of the best passers on the planet (class is permananet). kuyt... had a similar goalscoring reputation with the likes of huntelaar, van nistelrooy, samaras (hes shit lol) in the dutch goal-fest league.
the poor form of the pool team has reduced these players into absolute poo in the eyes of the kop faithful.
let me assure u dat as a outside observer i believe this pool team is NOT THAT FAR AWAY from arsenal chelsea man utd. after all u beat marseille 4- 0 (not that shit a team), draw/beat chelsea regularly (in pl and cl last year), feats that the likes of everton, man city, aston villa and other top 4 aspirants would struggle to achieve atm.
since u bought skrtel (and dat hobbs guy is meant to be good rite..) there is prob no urgent need to imrpove defence... maybe buy a new left back to replace the uncoordinated riise (who is one of my fav players after that shot against chelsea in the community sheild :D)
what u need is 2 really awesome attacking midfielders. yeh silva is great. vicente? joaquin? the whole valencia lineup? mikel arteta? every spanish winger u can think of? haha! quaresma seems like a selfish cunt but yeh evry1 here been sayin how good he is for a year now. aimer is awesome can also play on wing i think. daniel alves can try play him as attacking winger as well as right back. andrey arshavin did well gainst england. hartem ben arfa. antonio cassano? matias fernandez doing well in spain . adrian mutu, fiorentina gr8 season.
unless u are arsene wenger, u would have to play big money for these types of players- can dribble, good technique, creativity, fast, can score good goals.
more importantly though the likes of benitez and houllier have generally failed to impose their own winning formula on the so called "lesser league" teams. whether it b the luvly play of arse and manutd or the boring grind of avram grant's "supposedly entertaining" CSKA london, the top 3 have generally managed this season to set the agenda and " play their style" against smallish teams.
whereas liverpool... wot sort of style do dey play? dey are neither counterattackin nor possession. dey are no real flair team moves but neither is there the jose mourinho style suffocation. this is the reason why pool supporteres come to the conclusion that torres and gerrard are the only capable matchwinners.

Alonso, Crouch, Gerrard, Reina, Torres, Mascherano, Carragher, Agger and Benayoun at a push. The rest are average, but to be fair Utd have got average players in their squad too (Brown, Park, O'Shea, Fletcher), it's just their best is better than our best. We're 2 short of being really class a skillful striker/midfielder who makes things happen and an effective wide player (and maybe a proven centre-half - Woodgate would've done for the time being). But the players won't play with confidence if they don't believe in the boss and I'm afraid, through a combination of bad decision making on his part and astonishingly poor boardroom nonsense, he has lost it and it's only a matter of time until he goes - sad but true.

It's not only a question of getting rid of players. We have watched these same players play pretty great matches. At the moment most players lack confidence...and I can't say I blame them. Everyone is talking the club, the players, the owners and the manager down at the moment. It's hard to get passed that. I think the only way to move on is to get rid of the American owners and find some new owners who are serious about getting the club big again and not just someone who want to earn money on the club!
But then again...professional football players should be able to see past off field problems and just do what they do best...play football. To some extend they are doing that but the last 10-20% that makes a player play great instead of just okay is missing because of these problems. The really great players like Gerrard, Torres, Reina and Mascherano still play pretty good because even if they lack the 10-20% they still play pretty good.
Yesterday against West Ham a player like Aurelio really sucked....he should not be anywhere near the starting eleven playing like that. Kewell is starting almost every match even though he isn't showing any of the form which brought him to Liverpool. Babel does more in the 20-30 minutes he seem to get in almost every game as a sub for Kewell. And as both Kewell and Aurelio are playing on the left it's not a surprise that our left side sucks at the moment!
But the question in this topic is who in our squad are good enough to help us become title contenders.
Let me put our players into categories:
1. World Class: Gerrard, Torres, Mascherano, Reina, Carra
2. Players with potential: Agger, Babel, Lucas, Insua
3. Squad players: Benayoun, Alonso, Crouch, Arbeloa, Finnan, Kuyt, Riise, Carson, Itandje, Hyypia
4. Not good enough: Aurelio, Kewell, Voronin, Pennant, Le Tallec
5. The rest in our squad: I don't know these players well enough to say whether they are good enough or not.
So I would build our team around Reina-Carra-Mascherano-Gerrard-Torres using Agger with Carra and then buy 2 world class midfielders (RM and LM) and a striker. If the money is there a new RB and especially LB would also be great. Finnan has been world class but like others also say he is beginning to show signs of age. If it's not possible to buy a new LB then Insua should get his chance to show what he can do....it can't be worse than Aurelio!
We lack wide men!!
The real issue at Liverpool is the lack of wide men.
Look at the sides who've won the Premiership over the past 15 or so years and look at the key players they've had in their sides; Kanchelski, Sharpe, Beckham, Giggs & Ronaldo at Man Utd, Pires, Ljungberg & Overmars at Arsenal & lately Robben, Duff & J Cole at Chelsea. Even Stuart Ripley and Jason Wilcox had a good and effective season the year Blackburn won the title.
Benitez however has adopted a traditional Spanish style, playing quick passing compact football, which can look fantastic on the eye when it works e.g. Valencia in 2002/03 when they ripped Liverpool apart in the CL at the Mestalla. However, at Valencia, Benitez had technically far better players playing in a league where the pace allows time on the ball.
The Premiership is so hard and fast that in order to attack teams effectively, the play must be stretched.........and that's what Liverpool can't seem to do.
Is Pennant the answer? NO! At best, he's a squad player in any Premiership title winning side. Is Kewell the answer? NO! Unfortunately, it looks as if we'll never again see the mercurial talents he so regularly displayed at Leeds......shame!
Aurelio? No! Babel? Maybe.....but it looks as if he'll be moved to a more traditional centre forward role a la Henry (fingers crossed!)
Had Liverpool been successful acquiring Somoa or Quaresma two world class wingers, then perhaps things would be different?

We all know the players worth their note in our team mate, problem is we cant afford to buy to world class wingers and a forward. we are struggling to buy mascherano and possibly Pablo Aimar at 8-9million. its crazy but we really are that skint. Alonso isnt a squad player mate, he has the potential to be a great player, and carson is gone. Le Tallec will never return and arbeloa has proved he can play at full back just needs to get settled. so we do have some quality, also big Pete isnt bad he gets goals and causes problems, like to see him have a run with torres and put babel out wide to whip some crosses into him stick on his head. we have sorely missed agger and carra is losing his pace and sami has non so teams are coming at us and we are having to defend very very deep. Finnan has dropped a level and riise has dropped two but its not all doom and gloom, lucas and babel are good signings and yound, agger is young, reina is and torres, gerrard only 27 and alonso 26, mascherano is only 23 so the nucleus of a yound team which have won trophies and are all internationals is there to be exploited. just need find a man to do so.

See liverpool loose against west ham yesterday made be furious, we didn't play well at all and why is rafa plying aurelio and kewell. I totaly agree with you guys, players like:

Alonso though i think we should keep, I mean last year he were fantastic, he was playing great in the Champions League final, give him time...

I am not insane.I have nothing to base on that there are to be blame for poor result .it is just my opinion that this two shadow have been too big and have been around for to long .
I rememeber at Man U Sir Alex change his key player after a period of time disregard whether they are good or bad .In the good old day of Lfc ,this was done as well.
I believe the time is ripe for such a change .Lfc need fresh idea and new concept of play .Rafeal need players who can understand him and important of all team player .Gerrard for me is just a one man army while Carra starting to shown sight of weaknesses plus a couple of time rebuking player like Javi .It may be time to take the bitter medicine .

Nice to see the team win again in the league. I think we are lucky it was Sunderland as they're the worst team in the leagye along with Derby.
Our performance wasn't very good but we got the three points. Big games now lie ahead for 4th so let's hope we improve. Everton don't seem capable of winning tough games away so they'll rely on their home form to get 4th. That won't be enough if we get any form.
Though we still have Utd, Chelski, Arse and Spurs away. Looking at our form for most of the season we'll be lucky to even draw those games.
Victory Despite Benitez
We won today despite the effort of rafa benitez, the team always has to have an obvious weak link or links in it, i mean lucas out of position wide left and having a shocker, the deaf dumb and blind man would have dragged him off as soon as possible, but not our rafa, make no mistake a better team than sunderland today and we would definitely been behind at half time, "the correct leg for the chair or something he once quoted" MY ARSE, we were lucky that rob styles was obviously being generous to us because of what happened against chelsea, sometimes being a manager is easy, you play the players that are playing well in thier proper positions, or get the player to play how he is suppose to when you paid the money for him, needlessly faffing about with the team is definitely affecting confidence, i mean we don't even look like a prem team until we score, i don't always blame rafa, but he does'nt seem to be helping himself or the team anymore, the americans have nothing to do with our league position or team performance, won't happen now but DIC and Klinnsman the real dream team, i do believe we will win things with benitez, but not the premiership not even in a sunny sugar coated dream.

IT WAS A VERY NERVY PERFORMANCE FROM US TODAY, IN THE FIRST HALF WE WERE ABSOLUTE RUBBISH, WE NEVER TROUBLED THERE KEEPER ONCE, WE DIDNT HAVE A SHOT ON TARGET.LUCAS ( PLAYED OUT OF POSITION ) AND AURILIO WERE DREADFUL, AND AT HALF TIME THE GAME HAD 0-0 WRITTEN ALL OVER IT.
IN THE SECOND HALF WE UPPED OUR GAME A SUPERB GOAL FROM CROUCH AND ANOTHER GOOD GOAL FROM TORRES, THEN WE SWITCHED OFF AND SUNDERLAND STARTED TO LOOK AS THOUGH THEY WOULD SCORE, THEN WE GOT THE THIRD AND THE GAME WAS WON.
THERE WERE SOME GOOD PERFOMANCES FROM PENNANT ( THE BEST IVE SEEN HIM PLAY )AND MASCHERANO, CROUCH AND TORRES DID OK IN THE SECOND HALF AND SKRTEL WAS OK AS WELL. CARRAGHER WAS POOR AT FULL BACK , BUT PUT IN A GOOD CROSS FOR CROUCHES GOAL, LUCAS SEEMED OUT OF HES DEPTH, AND AURILIO WAS PLAIN ARWFUL.

The petition thats needed is the one to get RAFA BENITEZ OUT .
He is the one that keeps selecting Kuyt, he is the one that has brought all this rotation crap to the club, he is the one that has had us playing garbage football all season, and he is the one who keeps coming up with all the excuses.He is the one that selects the team that is 17 points behind the leaders.
He is a clueless areshole and needs to be shown the door.any decent Manager would have this current squad of players playing 100 times better than they are.

I dont like Rafa too Kev,but Alonso not perform well since he's back from injury. Now, we have masch, SG and Lucas who had a better perform lately. and i agree with u that we'd no problem with the midfielder role.
The reason why we'd drew and lose with those games, is we're not scoring goal. The fucking kuyt need to be blame for his headless and defending for upfront.send him to reserve team untill summer and sale him for free then.

Let me start by saying,i don't think we will win any major trophy with benitez in the next 5years.He just feels he can do things on his own.one thing i don't like about him is the stubborn head he posses.how can you use lucas on the left when you have got a ryan babel in the team to fill in that space?a jamie carrager on the rigth wing back when you need someone to throw the crosses.He has damage the attribute of players who should have become premiership stars.dirk kyut is not as bad as you guys think.benitez has damage is game.the way he tinker the team make player lose their form. the signing are bad too. we can produce players from the youth system like we normally do. why will you spend 6-7 million on lucas when we have a danny guthier who i rate highly than lucas.i guess becos hes from brazil rigth?Benitez tactics is not working for us.we play long ball which does not favour gifted palyers like torres,kyut,babal.benayoun etc. we need to play like champions.play the ball on a one-two basis. i really think benitez cant do the job for us. with benitez, we will lose young player that can make the youth system of liverpool rated as state of the art. adam hammil plays well,paul anderson,danny guthrie,jack hobbs etc,cant he give them a chance rather than asking for money everytime and end up buying average players.
