Liverpool's Champions League Draw: Porto, Marseille and Besiktas

Liverpool have been drawn against Porto, Marseille and Besiktas in today's Champions League draw.
Porto won the competition in 2004, and Former reds Cisse and Zenden have joined Marseille over the summer and could return to Anfield to face Liverpool.

Great win yesterday, it's exactly what you have to do to the weaker teams in the prem, it's a shame we did not put 4 or 5 past sunderland, but maybe when they come to anfield, it's fantastic to be top of prem (maybe briefly) and to know the others chelsea/utd/arsenal are now worried that LFC may have finally found the formula to be champs, still a lot of hard work to be done, there was some panicking when pompey did the asia thing, glad to see you have calmed down, fantastic wing play from pennant, whatever we paid for torres and babel may seem cheap come the end of the season ( pure class ) as you can see they are likely to get better, did not realise that arbeloa could be so tricky and smart, unless agger and carragher are both injured with 3/4 others LFC will not be fielding any so called weak line ups this season, houllier blew a golden opportunity a few years back around christmas time and so did roy evans back in 95/96 (i think), let's hope rafa keeps them focused.

Early Kick off
Early kick offs are a problem after international breaks, otherwise they are not bad. I prefer playing early on saturday. It put more pressure on other teams and you get to enjoy watching chelski and man u fail to win miserably. Beside playing on sunday give a disadvantage wen playing in the champions league on tuesday. Especially wen you have to travel to places like Istanbul. Anyway the league is our priority so we should play on sunday after international break.

I agree with u george we must be winning games like this one if we wanna challenge the mancs and chelski 4 the title they have been our bogey side the past couple of seasons but i think we have enough fire power 2 win the game comfortably i hope! lets hope the break we have had hasnt had an effect on torres,babel,yossi,voronin etc etc... fingers crossed eh?

Harbouring on about the past is something we reds like to do, but we all know its not always useful. I never wanted michael to leave and was pissed when he did, but we have had options lately to take him back at good prices and havent, fair enough you could say, but because of his recent exploits, its brought it back how damm good he is, i starting to regret not having him and dreaming what if, this season we be flying with him,

When fit Owen would expect to play in every single match-a fact that doesn't work out with Rafa.Owen is GREAT ,but his injury problems make it impossible to rely on him for a whole season championship challenge.What options we have in attack now is more than enough,and he should be regretting his dicision for leaving us more than we do.
Was i wrong when liverpool draw v/s portsmouth in preseason???
Well, i was among the first to criticise the team when it draw against portsmouth in preseason, and some were saying that the game was not important, in fact it was showing the fact that liverpool could not score against a team with mediocre players!!!
Benitez should have had learned a lesson from that match and put his best team from the beginning itself, with , Torres - voronin, gerrard, pennant, babel...
A useless crouch in the match, he could barely run during the counter attacks, using his hands to lean on opponents instead of using his height correctly.

its our first stumble
Granted we all wanted to win and should of on paper, but a draw away to pompey when were not playing well, a penalty save to keep us in it, and a clean sheet and 1 extra point, doesnt it sound like what man ure and chavski been doin during their title seasons?? I expected us to win soley on our great form, but a draw here isnt the worst, we are keeping up the points tally and cant win every match, 3 good 1's to follow now, like i said earlier in wigan , brum city and reading. Long as there are no slip ups there, we should be still top with points in hand. didnt get chance to listen to match, due to work so dont no if we played to decent game or not, but we all need luck in a title race and this could be ours.

So sad to see us losing the fist spot after just one fixture to Assnal...they won there last few games coz they don't have a rotation policy like Rafa and use their best eleven right from the beginning.
Will we won it back soon??? Only if Arsenal scrumble or lose points, even the porto game may look like a draw if Rafa don't learn from the preseasons matches like against Feynoord.

Rafa you ****, what the hell is he playing at, too bloody early in the season for anybody to be complaining about tiredness and players needing rest, in the context of prem title it was 2pts dropped, but having seen the game we were lucky thier strikers are worse than kuyt and crouch, we should have lost, it's not easy down there, which is why you pick your best eleven, we had no natural left sided players, not even on the bench, you win the game and then start taking players off, i thought that if we beat pompey we may have been top for the rest of the season, but rafa obviously does too much backward thinking, james was forced to make one save, and with very little wing play on either side, crouches limitations were exposed again, it was a poor performance and they were thier for the taking in the 1st half, as they kept giving us the ball, in the 2nd half they seemed to be the ones picking up loose balls, vorinin, benayoun, and momo messed up good opportunities to create, momo although improving needs to release the ball earlier, oohhhhhhhhhh it was a frustrating game to watch, but having said all that we are still in a decent position, i think stevie and parry should have words with stubborn rafa, as the prem winners tend to open up a lead and then fight like m****** f****** to keep it.

Just like Stevie did for England saying he wanted to play although Benitez was advising him to rest, he should do the same for club level, and show he don't need one week rest after each game like Rafa believe...the same should be for every player, one day of rest should have had been enough for the best 11 to punish portsmouth, had Torres been upfront with voronin in the first half, with the opponents losing so many ball early on , the game should have had been over by half time, coz from the Asian display it was clear portsmouth was a 0-0 team, so it was us who needed to make an effort and bring a team to bag at least one goal.

I think Allen Hansen best summed it up yesterday - It is necessary to rotate players in big clubs playing many competeitions.. I think both the Mancs & Chelsea rotated more than us last season.
HOWEVER, you have to look around at one of themost successful (currently active ) managers in the league in Alex Fergusson. He rotates against weaker opposition or at home or both !! You can't go to Fratton Park and not field The XI that's been dominating - Even if Gerrard was always to be a second half inclusion or none at all (i had one of the metatarsal injuries - they only heal PROPERLY with rest!!!)
YOU CAN NOT take out Torres at this point - he's new to the league just coming into form he needs games under his belt .. he didn't have any of the pre season training the others did. He must find his form with maximum minutes on the pitch.

Top for a week only
Not a good sign that we were top only for a week and immediately blow it by drawing a very winnable game. We needed to stay top to give the boys confidence in themselves that they belong there. Instead, we're playing catch up again.
Rafa's decision to rest Gerrard, Torres AND Babel from the first 11 was really stupid. These guys are our three best attacking players. We needed to win this game and stay top and Rafa blew it with his rotation shite. Why didn't he rest them against Porto and play for a draw out there? We need to win every week in the Premiership.
Yet again I am hearing about Pennant's great form yet I see no goals from the lad. Wingers nowadays have to chip in with at least 8-10 goals a season in a top team yet Pennant is toothless. Games are decided by goals, not running up and down channels all day. He has a lot to improve on.
The first 11 looks strong but if Gerrard, Torres and Babel aren't in the team we are left with 2nd rate attackers. Benitez needs to stop f-cking about and concentrate on the Premiership - by playing his best team in it as often as he can. Rotate against the likes of Derby at Anfield, not in tough away games Rafa for f-ck sake.

You right we need our class players Gerrard Torres and Babel to keep up the strength of our players. we don't need draws we want to win keep us on top. Pennant is a good player crossing the ball in, but as you say no goals from him yet. I have no fancy for England OK they won this time but see what will happen when they play a good team .I want Gerrard for Liverpool keep himself fit not warn out.Been on top of the premiership for a week it was a good feeling they will be again soon. Ok guys, every team needs a backbone of its best players,this rotation crap does not give it us, Iv said earlier on this week "NEVER CHANGE A WINNING SIDE". This is the English Premier League, the best in Europe, the hardest one to win, every point counts. we have to go out to win every game, if we have any hope of becoming champions we have to fight for point. 0-0, 1-1, 2-2, are not good enough.
If and its a BIG if we are going to have any chance of becoming champs we have got to stick to our best team.

I'll agree with your team, but i'll prefer finnan in the place of Arbeloa, and Arbeloa in the place of Aurelio.
As for kuyt, i don't even see him fit in the team, we need striker, not midfielders, voronin can score goals when played alongside torres, while kuyt will never learn to score in the premier league, so better go for Torres-vornin.
And Mascherano is much much better than Sissoko, sissoko does too many mistakes.
I'd prefer to see players like alonso, crouch, kuyt, benayoun, kewell etc to play only in cahmpions league matches or sit on the bench, and came in games only after we are being assured of victory or when playing sides like wigan..coz they showed twice they are unable to beat teams like portsmouth who play defensive games.

He was unable to score against portsmouth in the preseason, and i don't think he would have been able to change the game, At least voronin scores goal which are important, not against likes of toulouse..voronin deserves to play alongside Torres, he don't drop to the cornerpost like kuyt...he is our best player according to actim stats.
