Someone else having a go at Carra over international retirement

Liverpool FC

Since Jamie Carragher's decision to call time on his international career with England, many people have started getting on his case, starting from that gimp on Talksport, now Soccerlens has followed their lead ..

Carragher quit due to a lack of opportunities at International level, despite his excellent form at Liverpool over the last 3 years,  he has been constantly overlooked, and when he was picked for England it was either at right/left back or as a holding midfielder, rarely as a centre back.

Talksport were the first to call him a bottler, saying he didnt have the desire to play etc, and since then, everyone has stuck their nose in. When Shearer and Scholes retired, no one slagged them off,  but because Carragher isnt known for glamourous football or partying hard or hanging round with "WAGS", he gets laid into by everyone.

Usually , Soccerlens.com author Ahmed writes decent articles, putting good points across, but today he is way off the mark with the latest story "England - heroes (Chelsea) and losers (Liverpool)". He is calling Carragher and Gerrard losers for not playing, and singing Lampard's praises for playing with an injury.

Last night's game was a friendly, Gerrard's absence didn't matter, yet because Lampard also has a foot injury but played, he is all of sudden the best thing since sliced bread?

As for the comments about Carragher (from Soccerlens) "However, Jamie Carragher’s ‘retirement’ from the England cause, because he wasn’t getting enough playing time, is a bit pathetic and smacks of arrogance. Sure, sue me because I don’t represent my country at the international level in football so maybe I don’t understand who hard it must be to not be first-choice.

But give me a fuckin’ break - you quit international football because the new boss isn’t giving you enough playing time? You choose to give up playing for your country because you couldn’t be arsed to try hard enough to rise above your competition?"

Carragher did try and rise above the competition. He has played in 3 major finals in 3 years, won 2 of them, has rarely put a foot wrong in 3 seasons, showed far more effort to get in the fold (unlike Rio failing to turn up to drugs tests), barely missed a game through injury (whereas Woodgate was crocked for ages, as was King) but they still got in ahead of him?

I dont blame Carra one bit. England have sod all chance of winning the Euro Championships/next World Cup as they are simply not good enough. Why should he continue to be undervalued at international level, when he can be the first name on the teamsheet at Anfield, and his efforts are rewarded and appreciated.

I totally support jamie

I totally support jamie carragher on retiring from the england squad, even saying retiring is stretching it a bit as he was never seen as first choice by this or previous england managers, being a bench warmer tournament after tournament takes it's toll, just like if carson was to leave liverpool, he's been here 2 or 3 seasons but we would not miss him if he left and i would not blame him if he did, jamie was obviously too nice to complain at the time and cause some kind of disruption to the squad, anyone who criticise gerrard is obviously a numbskull, as the important england games are next month which he should be 100% fit for (they actually mean something) as points are at stake, apparently he may not be playing against sunderland because of the injury and healing time, if not, hopefully the team can show that we can play and win without him now and again.

You Should Always Play

I disagree with any player who "retires" from international competition. It should be a unique honour to put on your country's uniform, even if you sit on the bench. The vast, vast majority of players never get such a chance. In Canada, our hockey players rarely, very rarely, turn down a chance to play and represent their country. But I notice soccer players do it a lot. Zidane retired for a few years. Shearer retired before his time. And the list goes on. I have a great deal of respect for players like Beckham or David James who keep working, hoping they'll get the call again. They understand what a true honour it is to play for your country. Sooner or later, Father Time will take away your chance forever. If you get the chance, take it and never "retire" until you have to.

Players retire from

Players retire from international football for many reasons, some even make up lame excuses as to why, but in carragher's case (honest right down to his finger bone), he got tired of being a bench warmer, he's played in 2 champs league finals and he's waiting for players with half his experience and lacking some of his defensive abilities to get injured and then he maybe asked to play out of position, domestically he's won everything apart from prem title, which hopefully will arrive sometime in may 2008, he's had high praise from past and present football greats, so if jaime says he's had enough of that shoddy treatment, any real liverpool fan would take it to be true and fully understand, he's should not go to the next big tournament hoping he may get 2 ten minute substitution appearances and think he is lucky, he's already been places some others may never see, which includes the england captain.
