Are we ready for the new season?

The Premiership kicks off less than a week away, we have been busy in the transfer market, and have had quite a few pre season games, but are we ready to push for the title this season?
Tying up contracts of the main players, aswell as bringing in new faces has made Liverpool's squad on paper look like other teams will have a hard time beating us, but with the signings we have made and the players we have, can we really do it this time?
Its the same every year, Reds claim its "our year", only for us to slip up against smaller clubs, and the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United finishing ahead. In the past, we have brought in decent players, but have not quite got there. Rafa has had 3 seasons now, he knows the premiership, the physical demands, the high tempo, surely he has adapted to it by now?
Morientes is a prime example of someone with proven class who just could not cut it in the Premiership, only to go back to Spain and carry on scoring as if nothing was wrong, and now the pressure is on Fernando Torres not to do the same. One goal in pre season does not count for much , he has to find his feet in the English game quickly.
Yossi Benayoun was at West Ham, and was good in a below-par team, but with better players around him, and a better coach who will give him new ideas, he could turn out to be a star buy for the Reds.
Andriy Voronin has looked good in the pre season friendlies, but again, these games are not played at a fast pace, no one wants to get injured, so they are relaxed. If he can push Crouch and Kuyt for a place remains to be seen.
Our main losses have been Garcia and Fowler. Fowler was only a bit part player, but was influential, he lifted the fans, and would have been great to keep on board. Garcia always turned up at the big games, and we need someone to step in and carry on from him. Ryan Babel has not had that much time to show what he is capable of, but his huge price tag means there must be something there ready to unleash on the league.
On paper, our team looks very good:
Reina/Carson, Finnan/Arbeloa , Carra, Agger/Hyypia , Riise/Aurelio/Heinze?
Pennant/Benayoun Gerrard/Alonso Mascherano/Sissoko Kewell/Babel
Kuyt/Crouch Torres/Voronin
I have missed a few players out, but they are the pick of the bunch, not many teams can boast the strength and depth that we have this season, so hopefully this year can be "our year".

not even close mate.The game I watched against against Feyenord sums things up to be honest.I know its just a pre-season game .But you always want to win games regardless of what they are.
Playing too defensively makes us look like rubbish.Alonsos passes were all behind and only a few passes went forward.Kuyt thinks he has magical powers where he tries to get the ball away from 4 players and still doesnt fucking pass.Gerrard looked like he really didnt give a shit.
Alonsos passes were also quite shocking.
Defence at times were all over the place .It was just a crap game and i didnt like what i saw at all.I have reallt huge doubts about us winning anything or playing good football...even with the "big names signings we have made"
I just hope that this isnt what we should be expecting when we play villa ...if it is i will be very very dissapointed.

I THOUGHT WE PLAYED OK, KUYTS SHOT WAS A GOAL , THE PENALTY WASN'T , IT WAS A ROUGH GAME AND WE DID PRETTY WELL. REINNA WAS SUPERB, YOUR A BIT HARD ON KUYT ( WHY IS EVERYONE KNOCKING HIM RECENTLY ) , ALL IN ALL WEVE HAD A GOOD PRE SEASON.

Its not what I expected.Our style hasnt changed at all..we are too defensive..we have all the possesion but cant convert anything...yes kuyt is a work horse..but horses belong in ascot and not the pitch...instead of trying to be the hero ,,he should of tried playing other players in on goal too.

I muust say scouser4life1979 I mentioned this earlier in the pre season , my concerns about our negativity, lack of flair. I hope Babell , Bennyoun , Leiva, may make a difference. Our sucsess under rafa has been based on a solid defence, and most top teams have to have that foundation. hopefully we will play a more attacking game this season especially away from home.

Horses indeed belong on a racetrack. But methinks Kuyt is a plough horse. He belongs on a mountain.
Sorry Eddie but the reason people are getting tired of Kuyt is simple; we have seen enough 2nd rate foreign players at Liverpool in the last 10 years and it's becoming easier to spot them. As I said before, it's up to Kuyt this season to prove he's good enough. IMO he is an obvious 2nd rater more suited to Villa or Man City.
As for our performance; it was average at best. Then again we will never light up a football pitch with flair with Rafa in charge, even in preseason. Of course that can be accepted as long as we win things, but it would take a very, very brave man to bet on Liverpool for the title. I'm being realistic, not pessmistic.
We lack firepower; pure and simple. People go on about Crouch, Kuyt and Veronin as if they are worthy of a big club. They aren't; and no other big club would take them. That's because they aren't good enough for top teams.
Even Newcastle have Owen, Martins, Viduka and Alan Smith. In my opinion they are a better quartet than we have. Yet Newcastle will be battling for 5th-6th, not 1st.
To win the Premiership you need firepower. We don't have that so 3rd is the best we'll do. Benitez should learn a thing or two from Fabio Capello. At Roma he immediately bought a real goalscorer like Batistuta and won the Serie A with him. At Real Madrid he demanded they got a proven striker like Van Nistelrooy whose 25 league goals carried them to the title.
Benitez sticks with workhorses like Kuyt and Crouch and only has one quality striker, Torres, who isn't even prolific. For this we will struggle for goals and thus struggle to even challenge for the title.
We do well in Europe because we can play defensively and it's fine. In the Premiership small clubs play defensive against us and as Portsmouth and Feyenoord showed, Benitez isn't so great when he has to get his team to attack and break down the opposition. He is a negative coach at heart and so we won't have the attacking capablilties to lift the Premiership this season. Next season he will either become more attacking or else inevitably lose his job.
I hope like every other Pool fan that I am horribly wrong; but football isn't brain science and our limitations are obvious.

Alonso made a point about goals
I'm not saying Kuyt and Crouch and Veronin are rubbish players, Eddie, I just believe they aren't good enough for what we need to win the title off Utd and Chelski.
Alonso made a point about his lack of goals from midfield by saying his job is to cover the defence - in other words that's Rafa's tactics and what Rafa tells him to do. Without license to go forward many times during a game the centre midfielder won't score too many. Two centre midfielders to cover the defence Rafa uses instead of the one that Utd and Chelski use. That's why Lampard and Scholes have license to get forward. However I do think Alonso simply isn't very good at going forward and scoring many anyway. But why play him so often if goals is what Rafa wants from midfield?
Gerrard should play centre midfield every week in the Premiership, not Europe, alongside Mascherano or Sissoko with Pennant and Benayoun out the right side. We'd be more attacking immediately. Alonso is only useful for Europe where you need 2 holding midfielders. But remember Rafa played Sissoko and Mascherano together last season so you can't expect too many goals from midfield being so defensive.

Individualism
There does seem to be a lack of individualism about LFC, but it is rafa's way, like it or not, i don't think we can totally judge what's kind of a season we are going to have just from pre-season performances, it was good to see the players not wanting to take any crap from the feyenoord players, whatever rafa's instructions it's up to the players to battle as a team and raise their game as individuals, kewell and pennant need to deliver quality crosses not some of the time but nearly all the time, the midfielders need to chip in with goals as well, the same goes for the defenders, rafa's not really into high scoring games unless the opposition fall apart, so it may come down to unlikely matchwinners stealing points, i think momo will play very important role this season, it did'nt always come off for him pre-season, but he did seem to be trying to add to his game, the rollercoaster is about to begin, the heights, the depths, the agony, the ecstasy, and the absolute ridiculous, if the game did not invoke these emotions, would the last person leaving Anfield please turn the lights out.

Let me ask you a question.Arent you dissapointed about not being able to challenge for a league title for 17 odd years, when back then we were the team in charge.Look at it this way.Who else in the 80's challenged for the title with us at the helm...Arsenal thats who.Have they let go of the pedal?? No they havent.they have a few Epl titles under their belts and are happy about it.So why have we gone down hill?Ill tell you why.Bringing in foreign players who look good in international games (diouf,diao,baros) will always back fire.The way they play is different to when they come to play at a club and at a prestigous one like liverpool.
When GH was manager he made alot of mistakes.Yes we won five trophies in one season.But we missed out on the Epl ,which basically is what we all want.His mistakes were letting robbie go!!I dont care if we were given 12 million for him.As one of the top clubs ,you try and keep your top players.We are not southhampton or charlton in the sence that we need money to compete.Those teams sell their good players to generate money so they wont go bankrupt.
Never in my life have i seen the top 6 teams (not top four)sell their big guns.Why ??Coz the big lads are the ones you depend on.It would be like selling gerrard or carra to get alves.Do you see what im trying to say ?
GH's other mistake was buying players who cost a bit and who werent proven in europe or in england.Yes you might say the lads we bought now arent proven either.But they can play well for both club and country.Diouf wasnt worth the price tag.neither was diao ,neither was cheyrou.The only person who GH bought had potential to be a good LFC player was Cisse.But what did Rafa go and do ?He played him out of position and fucked him up basically.Just like whats going to happen with Babel.Babel might be able to play on the wing.But his real role is a all out striker.One who can score and score with ease from what i have seen.
Everybody hates being critisized at one point or other.But criticism is wanted,because thats how you improve and that how you learn.im not saying any of us is a good manager.But when you see that what your trying to do isnt working .Then all you have to do is adjust the mistakes where they need to be and change tactics .
Rafa said that you will see and attacking lfc.That has yet to be proven ,and from the game last night,its going to look like alonso passing the ball back to the defence ,or kewell getting close to the 18 yard box and passing it back to on of the wing backs.Thats not how you win games.The way to win is by pushing forward and never stopping.I dont care if the other team has parked a bus in front of goal.Its the attackers and players in general who have to move it .It is accomplishable.If it wasnt you would see 0-0 games for the entire season.
Bollox my fingers hurt now.All in all ,if we dont show others the ability that we can score goals from nothing ,then unfortunatley we will be playing for CL spots and not Champions spot.
On a final note.Attack is the best form of defence like we all know .so instead of looking for defenders and piling the changing room with DM's we should be looking for classy attackers who no matter what the game would be able to show us that he is worth a red shirt and a place in the team.

scouse 4 life,i know were your comming from. i accept many things you say,and i too want football played like we use to play it.but rafa has his own way, do not get beat at any cost. we have far too many midfield players,and why because they can play anywere utilty players rafa,s favorite player is a player who can cover more than one position. hence why he did not buy quesmra. as for houiller he was one of the worst mangers we ever had him and souness,both of them got us in to the mess were n now. yes i want the prem more than anythink, but i also think back to roy evans days remember the newcastle games. we played great but won nothink and i liked roy , they never gave him the money they gave houiller,still thats long gone.what we need is a balance and of course the right players as i have sad before rafa is are manger we have the right to critasise .but this year he got his money ,he bought his players, so give him this season to prove many people wrong. because the last thing we need is a change of manager, and we will be back to square one.

Rouman, everyone who supports Liverpool is behind Benitez because he has done very well in 3 years to get to two European Cup finals and an FA Cup win.
However, that hardly means he's perfect and beyond objective criticism. And if he doesn't learn from his obvious mistakes in the past 3 league campaigns - ie, being too negative away from home against trash Prem teams - then he won't win the Prem and eventually he will leave the club and we'll have to start again anyway. I've said many times I don't like his style of football, but after all the years of no trophies at Anfield I'm grateful to see a guy in charge that knows how to win.
But the Premiership is a different ball game to La Liga where he waited for Real and Barce to have bad form that allowed Valencia to take the title. Man U and Chelski won't lose more than 3-4 games and will win most of the rest. That's a stiffer test than Rafa faced in Spain to win the title.
We haven't held top spot even for a week in the league since Rafa took charge, so clearly there is massive room to improve in the Premiership. Getting behind the team is a prerequisite of being a Liverpool FC fan, but being honest in all judgements of our team is also.

I dont think I would to be really honest with you.Why do u think most of us fans want the EPL?Ill tell you.Its because we have 18 league titles .I dont care about the naming ,but facts are facts.Manure have 16 I think and i dont want them creeping up on us one bit.We have the title of being the most succesful team in england.I want that to stay .Thats why Rouman we want to win the EPL.
Why be content with winning the CL and FA cup.Why not have the ambition to go for all three?Why are we not as ambitious as the other top teams.At one point last season.the mancs and chelshit were going for trebles and quadruples.It was down to us and milan that that diodnt happen.

Like My fellow red 1Red1Pool said"we need to be beating the shitty teams in the premeirship to actually mount a serious title challenge"Look at some of the games we played.Bolton away,portmsouth home and away,blackburn home and away ,borough away ,fulham away,charlton home,Yes the latter two came at the end of the season,but what if they were the teams we should face at the begining .The only team who is clasified as shitty last season would be reading that we actually beat home and away also wigan.But that is not enough.
With the strength in our side ,we should be able to muscle out the opposition.Our players need to have their minds in their heads and their bollox where they should be so as not to run away from a challenge.
Our form last season wasnt great.In liverpool standards it was below par.CL aside.Remember when anfield was a fortress ??When we never used to lose.Well we lost 4 times then.3 of which meant something and meant progression onto another level of competition or stopping the mancs from getting 6 points from us.
You really want to know when id be satisfied with our side?Its when we are able to draw or win away with the big teams and only win whilst playing them at home.Once that is accomplished and once we are able to demolish a far weaker side ...thats when we will win the premiership and thats when we can breathe a sigh of relief and say ...FUCKING HELL MATE OUR TEAM KICKS ASS!!

I'll never be a fan of Rafa's style Rouman, nor Mourinhos or Capellos. I believe football should be played the way Liverpool played it in their heyday. But I respect winners whatever their style and I'll respect Rafa as much as anyone else if he lifts the title, playing whatever style.
However, his negative streak may well be what is stopping him winning the league. If he has to become more attacking to win the league he should have the brains to attack. He believes defensive football wins trophies and his CV proves this is true in many competitions.
But to overcome Man Ure and Chelski we need to win an incredible amount of games in the Premiership. Instead of being cautious and spending half the games in our own half with sideways passes, let's take the bull by the horns and go for the shite teams in the Prem home and away.
Remember, Man Ure lost home and away to Arse last season, drew twice with Chelski and should have been whipped by us at Anfield. But they won the league by whipping the shite teams. We can do this also with the right mentality; but not if we spend half the games defending and letting the shite teams think they can beat us because we're overly cautious.
We need to open up on these motherf-ckers and start whipping them. Then they'll fear us humiliating them and then games will be easier. Being too cautious gives the opposition confidence which then makes it harder to beat them. Man Ure hammer the shite teams and put the fear of God into them. This is what Rafa needs to get Liverpool doing; whipping teams by 4 and 5 goals. Like we used to do at Anfield and which made many opposing teams lose before they left the dressing room.
But will Rafa let our team off the leash to do this? It might not win us the title this year, but it'll get us close and excite the fans.

Yes we are ready - to compete for a champions league qualification position again. To expect more is to forget how far in advance Manure & Chelski were and that they have stengthened at the same time. The new American owners have expressd the view that they doubt we can do much more this season. To expect more is to place undue pressure on the manager and that could lead to wrong decisions being made about his future, all based upon unrealistic high expectations at this stage. My own view is that we have only made one significant addition to the squad for here and now - Torres. The others are squad additions or prospects. One real addition is not enough. We still require further investment in quality 1st choice players, particularly strikers and wingers. The manager needs unequivocal financial backing to make our high expectations a reality.
WHY CAN'T WE WIN THE PREMIERSHIP ?
PERSONALLY I RECKON WE HAVE A REAL SHOUT THIS SEASON, ARE THE MANCS AND CHELSKI REALLY THAT MUCH BETTER THAN US ?. WE NEED A GOOD START , IF WE CAN BEAT CHELSEA IN OUR SECOND HOME GAME ( AND I RECKON WE WILL ) THEN THAT WILL PUT OUT A MESSAGE . Man, did u watch the Charity shield??? The Game which Manure or Chelski play are 75% more rapid than liverpool play, they always send the ball forward as compared to Alonso play in liverpool, We never do a proper counterattack even if we have 4 against 2 players upfront!!
We have a workhorse whom Rafa likes to play, who don't score, or is unlucky to be offside or has his goals disallowed if ever he succeed to score.
Rafa need to be more harsh and use only players who are capable of scoring of giving 90% chances of winning a game.
Some can say alonso pass the ball well, but where?? To the keeper!!!
Some can say kuyt works well for the teams, BUT how many assists and how many occasions he has wasted as compared to others!!!
Pennant is far much better than benayoun, yet unfortunately he will be rotated, and we will have games in which we will either draw or lose, coz our strikers won't get proper crosses!!
The best defence is to score!!! We can win the premiership only if we score more than Manure/Chelski/Assnal...we don't look to be able to do that from what we have seen in the Preseason matches :(
Our game is too slow and too defensive, without creativity.
Its the first time that am saying it don't looks like this season gonna be ours :(

VOLARIN LOOKS LIKE A 6 YARD STRIKER TO ME AND KUYT NEEDS A BIT OF CONFIDENCE, HE COULD DO BETTER GETTING INTO THE AREA RATHER THAN CHASING EVERYTHING DOWN. THAT SAID HE WORKS BLOODY HARD.

The top two do play a pacier game than us, but you are right about them not being that much better than us, the 21 points difference was a little bit false as we gave up trying to catch them long before the end due to champs league pursuit, and we let the mancs off the hook at Anfield, fergie wished he had rafa's know how in getting to champs league finals, something i would gladly take getting to than anything else, i think if rafa does less tinkering this season and plays gerrard in the middle, we should see more productivity from all the midfielders, momo and stevie are the two to add pace breaking forward, if rafa throws a little bit of caution.

I'm not saying we can't beat them... What am trying to say is that the EPL is over 38 games, u need to score as much as possible, ManUre can have a crap defence and concede 2-3 goals, BUT for sure they have the capability of scoring 4-5 goals to win the match, so they can beat any other teams as compared to liverppol which has a solid defence yet can't score or even worse concedes goals.
Even if we win most of our matches, we won't be sure we will win the title coz teams like ManU gonna get better goal diference than us.
Chelsea has only Drogba, But he doaes his part of the job, scores one goal, and the rest of the teams take care of the rest, Defending properly...
They beat teams throughout 38 games...we don't look capable of doing that, Portsmouth and Feynoord match proved it in preseason...If 4 strikers can't score a goal, what u expect rafa to do!!!

Crouch deserves more credit than he gets, he is an hand full for any defense in EPL and Europe, what has the lad got to do, he scored some good goals last season (hat trick against Arsenal) and still gets stick. Kuyt is an headless chicken but worth a place on the bench, Torres is class,he will get in double figures and I hope has a good partner ship with Crouch, not sure yet about Voronin but let give him a chance, Babell looks ok a little hot headed but a goal scorer.

HE HAS SCORED A FEW PRE SEASON, HAS HAD A REST, THERE'S NO TRANSFER SPECULATION FOR ONCE, AND RAFA HAS SAID HE WILL PLAY MORE AS A CENTRAL MIDFIELDER.COME ON STEVIE G SHOW THE REST WHO REALLY IS THE BOSS. I have that same feeling and the thing is I first got it when I saw him swinging his arm up to another players face. Last season he did not play like he should have and we didn't see our champions league and FA cup hero for a second, but I just have this feeling in my stomach that he will do wonders for us this season
