Michael Owen - your pros and cons?
There has been a lot of speculation as to whether or not Michael Owen will
return to Liverpool this summer.
I cannot see where or when this idea was born, if it was the brain-child of
scheming tabloid journalists or the imaginations of the Supporters, getting
desperate for a resolution up front. Owen has given Liverpool a lot in his
time with the club.Following his hand in the 1996 Youth cup victory, he made
his debut for the Senior team against Wimbledon in may 1997, scoring a goal
after being put on as a substitute. With Robbie Fowler Out injured, young
Owen was thrust into immediate first team action in the 1997-1998 team
alongside Paul Ince and Steve McManaman. He completed his first full season
as the joint top premiership scorer with Chris Sutton and Dion Dublin. For
several seasons he proved consistency in scoring for the reds. The pinnacle
of his career came in 2001 when he played an important part in the clubs
most successful season in over 12 years, securing the famous treble:The
League Cup, The UEFA Cup and The FA cup, Shining particularly in the FA cup
Final, since dubbed 'The Michael Owen Final'. He had certainly Won the
hearts of many Liverpool fans and was a hero and role-model to the younger
generation of supporters. He continued with his goal scoring habit with 19
and 16 goals in his final two seasons with the reds respectively. But
following Gérard Houllier's inevitable departure from the club, the end of
Owen's time at Liverpool became almost equally inevitable, as under Rafael
Benitez he started the season on the bench for the Champions League
matches, clearly trying to avoid being cup-tied.In August 2004 made the
switch to Real Madrid. However his subsequent career was marred with injury
and many matches of starting on the bench. His Injuries have prevented him
from securing any first team position as at Newcastle he made only 14
appearances in two full seasons.
Liverpool fan's seem to be Living in the hope that if Rafa should sign him,
his plague of injuries will disappear and he will emulate his own past by
scoring 16-19 goals a season or even more. However, Others believe it is
more realistic to believe that if would come back, good money would be
wasted on a player who will spend more time on the physio's table than on
the pitch. Imagine if the Fans had a real influence who the club purchased
during the transfer window, don't you think it would worsen the situation
with all the contrasting opinions and views?
What are your views on the Owen situation? Try weighing up pros and cons
here to see which wins over, should Owen return to the club or would he be
more of hindrance than a help?

OWEN
Get over it and leave players like this in the past !!! Surely this would be a backwards step for us especially as i dont and never have rated Owen that highly anyway !!! Also you have the injury baggage that is not needed when you want a settled side (although Rafa doesnt settle much)does anyone remember Redknapp a great player who never played - i feel that someone like Torres to partner Kuyt who i feel will shine even more next year is the answer - Anyway by the looks of things by the time we become active in the transfer market we will only have the likes of Geoff Horsfield and Derek Asamoah left available to us :-)
No WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rafa's not desperate enough to land a B-list strikers such as owen, bent or trezeguet.IF he doesnt have the money, expect him not to sell bellamy and we'll have voronin, kuyt, crouch and bellamy for next season.
I think we'll only get malouda or simao, with maybe diego milito for next season, and mabe a loan of a young goalkeeper for the reserves, mark my words,I'm not feeling to good after all those empty promises they've thrown at us as early as February.
The money the owners have had gone to the Stanley Park Stadium and I'm afraid we're just another Arsenal, skint because of the new large capacity stadium that should've been built long, long time ago for a club of our stature.Missing out on 20,000 more supproters every week for at least 3-5 seasons has left us with no basis, and no money to spend on players.Add that to the free-spending of Houllier era and the bullshit players we've bought during summer 2002.
dont know why
i dont really know why they want a bigger stadium 4 anyway 2 me that spells trouble bcoz if theres more seats they'll only b more arseholes causing fights well thats my oppinion anyway any1 agree?
70,000 seats or more is right
Julie,
Look at all the super clubs across Europe the size of Liverpool; Real, Barce, Milan, Juve, Inter and Bayern. They all have much bigger stadiums than Liverpool because huge clubs have huge stadiums. Smaller clubs have smaller stadiums.
60,000 seats suits Arsenal, but Liverpool are a step above and deserve a massive stadium with over 70,000 seats like the Camp Nou or Bernabeu or San Siro. Liverpool are a much bigger club than most other clubs on the planet; the new stadium should reflect that like the Nou Camp befits a huge club like Barcelona.
We need a bigger stadium to
We need a bigger stadium to create more revenue. Arsenal have 60,000 at 65 pounds an average price per ticket. There average attendance is 58,000. Our's is 42,000 with ticket prices at a 38 pound average. Do the maths and see how other clubs are becoming richer than us. ESPNsoccer net has all the prem clubs details like this. Man U's revenue from this is huge. Thats why we needa bigger stadium.
owen
owen is a great player and everything positive said about him is probably true. it sticks in my throat that TWICE he has chosen NOT to play for liverpool, the first time to play for real madrid, (i hate them anyway!) i can forgive. even rushie left for a working holiday. he came back. owen didn't. i don't want him back now and i think rafa doesn't either. if he does come back i pray he proves me wrong as i don't have any confidence in him
Owen or bust
What if its a case of owen or bust?? would anyone want him then..we have to brace ourselves for a very unproductive summer transfer window ,especially with all the prices going sky high. Its a case of milking you out for what money you have.
So when our glorious club advertise that they have a magnificent war chest then you know whats gonna happen....chelsea and man f__king utd know too well...rafa isnt only a manager he is a business man and wont pay more than what a player is worth.
Malouda at 18 million ....no bloody chance...assnal chelski are bidding for him.Eto'o has had milan show some intrest so thats down the drain too..tevez has caught the eye of inter...so whos left ?? oh and btw west ham got bent so no one say Bent.
Reality check about Owen
People here have short memories. Owen's injuries have been unlucky; he scored 16 goals for Real Madrid even though he was usually a sub. If he was there now Capello would have played him most weeks.
It's all very well talking about Eto'o, Torres etc.. etc.. but with the cash we have we're more likely to be buying Marlon Harewood. And a relative unknown 28 year old like Diego Milito isn't going to be the man to shoot Liverpool to a title.
So, is Owen a better striker than Bellamy, Crouch, Kuyt and Veronin? Of course he is! And anyone that says otherwise is talking nonsense. So even if Owen isn't the player he was, even if there are other strikers in Europe who are currently better, he's still well above anything we have in front of goal. So maybe we should be realistic about our options and be glad if we can get him
Because I for one am sick and tired of looking at our donkeys up front prove they aren't good enough for a title winning team. Owen may not be the number one striker anymore, but he's well worth having in your squad rather than midtable strikers like Kuyt and Crouch. Bellamy at least has talent if not the finishing instincts.
owen
i have said, many times on this site that owen, needs liverpool and we need him.he is better than what we have, and steets ahead of bent. 1red pool, you are spot on. the only man we have to convince, is rafa. i want him back, but we need some one else with him. swap him for bellamy. why not get vincente, they play joquin, more,so come on rafa . also why not swop cisse, for anelka.
17 mil
malouda for 17 mil,no way. there are better wingers than him for less. simeoa, and my favorite vincente. i have this funny feeling, rafa is going to shock us all. they have put the prices up , well we want players, fit to wear the shirt.its no good having a new ground, and the same team playing in it. we all want to win the league. and we need the players to do it. you need a winning team to bring to our new ground.
Owen, Simao and ???
I can see a straight swap with Bellamy and Owen happening. There might have to be a couple million extra on our end, but that deal wouldn't cost us more than 2 mil. Past aside, in my opinion Owen is a better striker than Bellamy, and it would be a great deal for cheap.
As for a winger, Simao looks like the best deal out there at 12 mil. As for another striker, I would be happy with Torres, Henry (not happening), or someone similar. Eto isn't happening either.
Even with say Owen, Simao, and Torres signing, we would only have spent 39 mil out of our rumored 54 once we sell all our players. Those three would be great signings and change the team greatly.
OWEN
HE`S A PROVEN PREMIERSHIP GOALSCORER !
BUY HIM & SELL BELLAMY.
THE GOALS WILL COME.
No On Owen
Sorry but I say no on the injury prone Owen. Lets move on...
Anelka Not Owen
People also have short memories about a certain Nicholas Anelka, who was a marvel at the club until he was shafted on his loan spell by Houllier. Wherever Anelka has played he has scored goals, FACT!!!
Be it on the continent or at the Premiership, Anelka has scored goals at all levels. Rafa has a glorious chance to get a player, that is quick, fantastic first touch and finishing and also is less injury prone than Michael Owen. And guess what, we can get him at the same price as Owen, plus the fact we could get a full season out of him.
Im not a Michael Owen hater, far from it, i admire him, his goalscoring record is phenomenol for Liverpool, but the poor bloke has been plighted by injuries.
Anelka is an admirer of Liverpool FC, the fans and the city, hes been quoted. So why not put in a bid for him, he is class, i'd love to see him back at Liverpool
here here
yes i agree with u mikec i remember when he was at liverpool he is a class player we should get him if MAN UTD or CHELSEA dont get in there 1st just 2 piss rafa off
Benitez doesn't like Anelka
I would be happy with Owen or Anelka because they are both quality players. But Benitez could have had Anelka since he arrived at Liverpool and for whatever reason he didn't sign him or even bid for him. He could have had him last summer instead of Kuyt yet chose the inferior Dutchman.
I admire Anelka's class, he is a top striker. But Owen is more likely to be accepted by Benitez. Remember, Anelka made a bad name for himself in Spain with his behaviour at Madrid and Benitez clearly hasn't forgotten. There's no other logical reason not to buy Anelka based on his superior football ability compared to the strikers we have.
Owen and strikers
Owen i would have him back in the team straitaway i recon we could get him for about 8mil or bellamy and 2mil.Dont no about anelka i think hes shit abit like torres 1 good game and 8or10 bad ones.26million is way to much 4 a player who has never plaid in the championes league befour and got no expirence at that level look at morientes all that expirence in europe and yet so shit 4 us more so in the league andi recon torres will be the same.I would much rather see Villa come 4 that same sort of money or defoe now spurs have got bent yeah that would be good Owen, Defoe, crouch and kuyt
Not Anelka !!!
he's a good striker sure, yet what I keep getting my way is how Torres is overpriced and doesn't have Premiership / Champions League experience !!! How can you get it if you are only 23, and playing somewhere else ?!!!
Seriously. Beside, Morientes is WAY TOO different from Torres. Both have different styles. Morientes to me was like Trezeguet with Juventus, only waiting for the last chance to come over, he doesn't build chances, or get a bit deep with the midfield to create a chance, whereas Torres is a bit of both, he'd us his abilities in the air, poching goals and all, as well as getting a bit near midfield to get his chances. Some might say he only scored 14 goals last season, but hey 14 goals with a side like Atletico Madrid who LACK creative midfield in all sorts is an achievement by itself, it says about his playing style of being involved and not just wait for chances to pass by. If he ever signs with us "which sounds pretty much near" he'll have a better service from Alonso, Gerrard, Kewell, Pennant, and whoever other wingers we'll be adding this summer, so need to compare him with Morientes...
And for Deofe, he's good, yet I dunno, Benitez doesn't sound interested, may be cause we already have Crouch, Kuyt, Voronin "whom we don't know much about" and soon-to-be-#-9 Torres!
