Why should Kewell play in the final?

With Rafa Benitez saying Harry Kewell could figure in the final, why should he play ahead of the others who have worked hard over the whole season?

Kewell has made one appearance this season. One appearance, just over 15 minutes against Fulham, where Liverpool lost 1-0. He was expected back for the Barcelona game, he didnt play. He was then expeceted back from the Wigan game, again he didnt play.

Benitez said about Kewell's chance of playing in the final : "It was positive to see Harry again. Maybe he will have a chance for the final. We will have time for testing him.

"We need to test him because right now you could say physically that he is fit but really you need to play, you need to tackle, and to sprint".

Kewell faces competition from Zenden and Gonzalez for a place in the final, players who have played far more times, worked hard in training, Zenden especially has had a tough season, has been criticised week in week out, but has shown in the Champions League against PSV and Chelsea that he has deserved a place. He has made 17 appearances this season but has yet to score.

Gonzalez has been unlucky with injuries, but has played well recently, against Wigan he was getting up for headers well, was using his pace to beat players, was tracking back to help out. Gonzalez has made 20 appearances, scoring only 3 times, but surely it is unfair on Bolo Zenden/Mark Gonzalez that Kewell walks back into the team after a long season?

People argue that Kewell is the best left sided player in the team, when we first signed him he was in such good form from Leeds, but he has never really replicated that form. Everyone knows his quality, just look at his goals against Everton/Spurs, and his FA Cup semi final performance against Chelsea last season, but at the same time he has had his share of bad games too.

A place on the bench maybe, to throw on if we are drawing and need a goal, but no way should he start. He will have one game at the most to get used to the pace again, that cannot be enough preparation for the biggest game of the season?

Rafa suggests Kewell may well play a part in the Athens final. Bloody staggering - get all the way to a prestigous final like this and consider playing a lightweight with no match experience for over a year. Unless its a copy of his first master plan in 2005 - go 3 goals down and then start at half time. The achievement in getting to the Champions League Final is staggering with Benitez at the helm.

Whilst I don't begrudge his a game he shouldn't play in the final, well definately not start anyway - could be there as a sub?

Kewell

"I don't bloody believe it"
as said by one Victor Meldrew,
well neither do I,
Harry Kewell may well play a part in the Athens Final...What must the other players/fans think of this?
every one else in the team sweat there balls off, run them selfs in to the ground, play through the pain barrier, and put the fans on an emotional roller coaster, and then Mr Harry Kewell just walks into the side while doing sweet FA to help us getting there.
Come on Raffa, Iv got nothing against Harry but at least repay the lads who got us there, not some one who has only played 15mins in a nothing game, who cant possible be match fit for a game of this calabre.
On his day and fully fit Harry Kewell is one of the best left sided players in the Prem let alone Liverpool,

Zenden or Gonzales are going to be a far better bet for this match.

You said it! What if the 23rd of May is his day? I would feel sorry for any player who gets dropped at the last minute for an all season absentee. If Kewell is fit he has the Talent to influence a game of this stature. Rafa has a job to do, to WIN that trophy. In order to do that you need your best players, one of which is Kewell. If Rafa feels Harry is a jeopardy he won't play him.

Its the Champions League Final, no time for sentiment.
Let me ask you this: If it were Steven Gerrard coming back from a long term injury would you be giving out?

hk

i reckon if he is fit enough they should play him he s better than zenden he might even be ara secret wepon him on left pennant on the right ther your right champions league final no room for sentiment if there was i have robbie there
