Your starting 11 against Chelsea?
Liverpool face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Semi Final of the Champions League on Wednesday night, who should be in the starting 11?
With some people pretty much guaranteed to play, such as Reina, Carragher, Alonso and Gerrard, who do you think should play to ensure we win?
Finnan or Arbeloa at right back? Agger or Hyypia? Riise or Gonzalez on the left wing? Momo or Mascherano alongside Alonso? we are fortunate to not have that many injuries at the moment, Rafa has a decent squad to choose from, Pennant is in great form, Mascherano has not put a foot wrong, but at the end of the day there are only 11 starting places.
I think we should go for : Reina
Finnan Carragher Hyypia Arbeloa
Pennant Alonso Mascherano Riise
Gerrard
Crouch
then on the bench we can have the likes of Kuyt, Gonzalez, Bellamy, Fowler, Sissoko, Agger and Dudek.
Who do you think should play?

Why the bloody hell is Fowler being benched all of a sudden?
Why the bloody hell is Fowler being benched all of a sudden? He's pretty much God on that pitch! He is (since I can remember supporting Liverpool(10 years now) and I am only 14) the original Scouse GOD and that number 9 shirt should be a blur on that pitch from the first minute! He's a bloody fantastic player and everyone I know who supports Liverpool agrees he's easily the best man on the pitch. So why is he not on the starting lineup?
Fowler
There is no way Benitez will start with Fowler upfront. Id like to see him play just as much as everyone else, but Rafa rested Mascherano against Wigan, hes obviously in the frame to be playing tomorrow, so and i doubt that Alonso/Gerrard will be dropped , so unless Gerrard goes on the right we will probably play with one upfront. If we have two, Kuyt will probably play after his 2 goals at the weekend.
Fowler has struggled to get a game all season, wasnt on the bench for the wigan game , where one of Crouch/Kuyt/Bellamy could have been rested.
I see your point
Gutted! He's a class player, he shouldn't just be parked on the bench. He should be out on the pitch where he belongs, but hey, Rafa's hardly led us wrong or let us down yet. It's probably just me and my favourite teacher overreacting. There was a large discussion today when I should have been writing my essay (I think I was bored so we started talking about tomorrow's match). I think I'm just voicing joint concerns really ha ha
I'd put maybe Kuyt up front,
I'd put maybe Kuyt up front, his 2 goals the other day could have given him a taste for goal again. I'd also put Agger ahead of Hyypia anytime. He's done the business against Chelsea already this season and he's got a great partnership with Carra and we shouldn't break that up. The rest looks good. Maybe Gonzalez instead of Riise. Chelski's right side is there weak point and it should be exploited.
chavski
in my eyes t/m nite we have a fantastic opportunity to book the plane for athens. chavski will be without essien which is to me a bonus what with ballack out to. i think the key to the game will be width. if we can get at chavski down the flanks and get decent balls into crouch & kuyt, whom i expect to start up front, then we have an awesome chance.
chavski are not to be underestimated tho, we all know that. if we can come away t/m with a score draw or, dare i say it, a 1-0 win, it sets it up next tues nite at anfield just a tad bit tasty!
people say "what if you get man ure in the final?" end of the day we are not in the final yet, neither are they but we are in control of our own destiny and we should worry about liverpool football club, not anybody else's destiny.
so good luck t/m redmen, do us proud and set us o the road to athens! YNWA!
I voted NO!!
I voted no to be honest..I'd rather be pesimistic than optimistic so as not to get disheartened..Dont judge me for voting no but i dont want us to have high expactaions and then miss out...its heartbreaking..trust me its happened before..all we can do is wish the lads a whole lot of luck and hope no mistakes are made on the defence behalf including pepe reina, I still am not confident of him jumping out for crosses though.
Both teams can win it to be honest but we (as in liverpool)have the psychological edge , we've beaten them in the major competitions.
As for the mancs winning..well another bloody heart-breaking experience but milan looked vulnerable at times just like they did against against us when we won it...who to meet in the final ?? Your guesses are as good as mine ...lets just pray and hope one of the teams is us!
semi final
tonite we will all be biting our nails sweating hearts pounding with every kick our nerves will be shot to peices maybey even tears throats horse the cat kicked side to side all in the life of a liverpool surporter wouid not have it any otherway come on you mighty reds make are dreams come true
Semi Final.
Rouman, I for one echo your words, we would have it no other way, dreams can come true so come on you REDS lets stuff the Chavski blues then the special one can moan for another year.
Reina finnan carra agger
Reina
finnan carra agger arbeloa
pennant Gerrard sissoko risse
Kuyt crouch
wouldn play hyypia, too unreliable in big games like this!
I'm praying!
If Liverpool lose (Please God don't let it happen) I'll never hear the end of it. My stupid uncle's a Chavski (urgh that leaves a bad taste in your mouth doesn't it?) supporter and he'll never stop gloating. I also think we'll have to play down their right side, and Essien and Ballack being off is a huge asset to us. Come on lads! Play clean and who knows what we can achieve! We still own Europe no matter what that jumped-up little Chavski muppet says!
I wouldn't play Sissoko.
I wouldn't play Sissoko. He's a liability. Mascherano, Alonso and Gerrard in the centre. One up front and wingers firing in crosses. Chelsea will have something similar. Compare our centre midfield to the possible Chelski select, Lampard, Makalele and Mikel. I'd have to say our three have more to offer. Chelski have better wingers and strikers, but I'd be surprised if the game was won in them position. In defence our left side is the one to watch, I hope Arbeloa plays like he did in the Barca tie. Chelsea are weak at the right back position.
starting XI
Reina
Finnan Carra Agger Riise
Pennant Alonso Mascherano Gonzalez
Gerrard
Crouch
that would be my starting XI
team tonight.
it's a shame about finnan.I'm glad he's starting with 2 up front, think i would have started with crouchie and brought bellamy on later. The only prob i can see is ZENDEN wtf is that all about i'm not a fan of his at all!!?whats wrong with Gonzalez the chavs would hate to him running at them down the wing?anyway good look lads . KEEP THE FAITH.
Y.N.W.A
Nick
team tonight
WTF, ZENDEN? oh my god!!! whats up with Pennant? in the best form for Liverpool and hes on the bench!!!..
Any way good luck lads, Y.N.W.A.
come on you reds.
cram that. Where's Fowler???
Sod that, I want to know where the HELL Fowler is!!!!! And why he isn't playing
far from over
well it's all set for a crazy nite at anfield next tuesday. how the hell zenden started is beyond me! chavski won't know what has hit them next week and that's just the crowd! come on redmen, we can do it!
Could have been worse
1-0 means we have a chance but if we let Drogba run riot again we will lose at Anfield.
Agger couldn't handle Drogba at all and I was angry Hyppia wasn't brought on when it became clearly obvious all Chelsea were doing in the entire 2nd half was lumping the ball to Drogba. Surely Rafa realised Agger couldn't win hardly any headers so he'd have to at least try to use Hyppia to counteract the long ball. We were lucky they didn't get a 2nd. Hyppia has never ever lost as many headers in a game as Agger did tonight so Benitez has to seriously consider starting Sami at Anfield. Nullify Drogba and the long ball and Chelsea struggle.
Kuyt is not good enough at this level as many people have said before tonight. His effort can't hide his utter lack of class. Bellamy was extremely disappointing and Crouch didn't get any chances and can't do much on his own. Our forwards are 2nd rate at this level as we all know. Zenden staying on for 90 minutes was baffling because he couldn't put in one quality ball.
I think we need Sissoko at Anfield too because it will be a physical battle again not a technical game so you need Sissoko in there tackling. Finnan was badly missed too.
We HAVE to play 4-3-3 at Anfield because Zenden and Gonzales are not good enough to start and we have no other left winger except an unfit Harry Kewell.
Reina
Finnan
Hyppia
Carragher
Risse
Sissoko
Alonso
Mascherano
Gerrard
Crouch
Bellamy
i echo tat..
Its a shame tat we've got so many players but only a few reall cant stand up n be counted when needed most! The likes of Zenden MUST go! Never did impress once! Gonzales is takin ages to adapt but hopefully he'll be ok next season..
part 2
rafa why play zenden even agger had a bad game hypia never ever gave drogba a easy game and rafa were is fowler we need to make sure we give chelsea hell in the second leg let the players loose rafa let them play bellamy was poor let blackburn take him back we will all be behinde you at the second leg now is the time to be counted come on you red men
there is hope yet..
I dunno wats up wit Rafa n Zenden! U guys were all cracking ur heads between Gerrard, Alonso, Sissoko, Mascherano n all.. Never did anyone mention Zenden but he gets it! Well i guess he must be really impressing Rafa on the training pitch where it matters least.. And why Pennant on the bench??!! Tat dude pumps in crosses more than anyone else in the league! I only wish we can a younger Hyypia..
Red4life
Drogba may be beaten in the
Drogba may be beaten in the air by Hyypia. But he'll destroy him on the ground like he's done before. Forget about blaming Agger. It was quite evident once again that we are lacking up front. Kuyt is never in the box, Bellamy doesn't look arsed and Crouch keeps bringing the ball away from attacking areas. When he chest it he sticks his chest out, so instead of trapping the ball he knocks it ahead of him. Fowler's the only forward we have with a bit of craft, he runs in the right areas and at the right time. Great first touch, which in turn gives him time to find support. Chelsea were not the sharpest in this game and if we had performed at all we'd have destroyed them. Kuyt, Bellamy and Crouch?? I'd rather Baros, Cisse and Sinama Pongolle ahead of anyone of them. Fuck it, Ian Rush at 45 is more use than them.
Hyppia is worth the risk
Mourinho sensed Agger was vulnerable to Drogba and that's when the aerial bombardment began. If Agger plays again at Anfield and is not physically strong enough to stop Drogba then we will be slaughtered. He's a talented young defender but Drogba is a physical beast. Hyppia is at the end now we all know, but in a European Cup semi-final at Anfield Sami Hyppia won't let Liverpool down. He has the strength to fight Drogba which Agger lacks.
We have to keep a clean sheet or we're fcked so I think playing Agger again will play into Chelsea's hands. They'll do exactly the same thing again launching the long ball. Carragher can't match Drogba in the air either; only Hyppia can. I believe he'll shackle Drogba if he plays. I don't think Agger or Carragher have the physical strength to do that. And with all the flick ons Drogba gets it's inevitable Chelsea will score if we don't stop Drogba.
We took the risk to play
We took the risk to play 4-4-2 but when we play like that why the hell would Rafa pick Zenden to be up on the wing?! Agger has no chance against Drogba...We need Pennant or Gonzalez...Hopefully Pennant so Stevie G can play in the center...Mascherano didnt have a good game but I agree with whoever said Sissoko is a liability...He is too erratic for a Chmps lge SF 2nd leg...We need Hyppia at the back...We need to attack like mad at home and get the one goal...If we get 2...Stuff the damn midfield!
Left Mid?
When we play chavski next we need Goals. For me it has to be Kuyt and Crouch up front. But my question is who do we play on the left of midfield?
Gonzalez would be the first name into my head but, Bellamy can also play left, not a winger like Gonzalez but someone who comes in and strikes! And then theres Riise, we could play Arbeloa in left defense and Riise left mid?
apart from that the squad is easy. Gerrard, Alonso center mid Pennant Right. And in defense Finnan, Carragher, Hyyipa, Riisa (Arbeloa if Riise is in mid). What are your Thoughts.
Pure aggression needed
It's pointless trying to play pretty football against Chelsea as they just swallow you up with their power.
I believe Benitez should start with Hyppia, Sissoko and Crouch to give us more physical power at Anfield. It will be a battle of muscle with long balls and frantic tackles the majority of the action so we need to be ready for it.
Arbeloa looks like he will be a useful squad player in the future for us but I wouldn't use him unless we have to at Anfield. He is not used to that type of high intensity physical match and at times it was obvious with his mistakes.
Finnan Carragher Hyppia Riise is a totally experienced back four who have played these type of matches against Chelsea and won. Kuyt needs to pull the finger out and stay in and around the box. He needs to work on his first touch too between now and Tuesday because too often it's not good enough.
We need to play like LIONS for 90 munutes and remember a 1-0 win brings it to extra time and penalties if no one scores. We cannot concede a goal like we did againts Benfica last year because we won't get 3.
next tuesday
from what i can make out from last nite me personally i would have to start with pennant and gonzalez nxt wk. Move stevie into the middle partnering either sissoko or mascharano. Play sami not agger. As good as agger has been for us this season sami would handle drogba better.
Last nite zenden proved his worth to the red shirt, nothing. Sorry, that's my opinion. Would rather have seen gonzalez their and that's saying something! Also start with crouch and kuyt and get finnan back in at right back.
Whatever team benitez chooses next tuesday it is sure to be "1 of those anfield nights"! It will be deafening, a rollercoaster of emotions and in my heart of hearts i know we can do it! COME ON REDMEN!
second leg
i was dissapointed last night because we played with fear and the team rafa picked zenden bellmay 2 poor players at least zenden use to be good but bell allways has been caught out by any class defender iwas never a cisse fan but he is better than bell how he does not give fowler a game is beyound me bells faster yes but no were in the same class as robbie even now as robbie hits 31 not a pennant fan either but he has been playing well he should have played instead of zenden when will we buy a player who can hld the ball and beat players and not pass back all the time on tuesday we need to get off to a fast start and a quick goal then suck chelsea in and hit them with a second and a third come on lads do not loose all are dreams the mighty reds
simao
don't know if anyone reads the mirror but their was a tiny piece y'day from rick parry stating liverpool are still interested in simao. Be v interesting to see where that ends up as we have tried to sign him twice b4 but benfica have priced us out of the market.
Cannot understand for the life of me why robbie is being over-looked for the champions league games. Ok, his fat arse won't let him move like he used to (only joking rob!) but his footballing brain is as sharp as ever. Come on rafa! Someone mentioned kuyt isn't up to the standard at this level i.e champs league. Er, when was the last time dirk played in a champ league semi? This was his 1st 1 and not the only l'pool player eithers 1st! Dirk's ok, he's had a reasonable 1st season, he works his bollocks off and the fans love him. He'll be better player nxt season.
Change of venue for the Final?
I have it on pretty good authority (don't know how true mind!) that club representatives and UEFA officials have met this week to discuss the possible 'scenarios' that can happen to make up this years European Cup Final.
AC Milan v Liverpool or Chelsea
Everything remains the same.
Chelsea v Man United
The Greek authorities to be compensated and the venue to be switched to Wembley.
Liverpool v Man United
The Greek authorities to be compensated and the final to be played over two legs home and away. Allegedly this is due to the Police in the North West being familiar with how to handle the fans from both sides and would be able to control the matches in the best possible fashion.
If this is true, there will be a few questions such as:
1. Why could Wembley not be the venue for the final if Liverpool and United were to meet?
2. If the final was played over two legs, who would get home advantage second? (I presume the toss of a coin)
3. How would the ticket allocation be made up based on the size comparison of the 2 stadiums?
4. How did Zenden manage to play the full 90 minutes at Chelsea without being subbed???!!! (just thought I'd throw that one in!)
If any of it does come true, remember that you heard it here first...
silly mistakes
read a quote in the paper today from stevie stating that catergorically the tie wasn't over and we'll do them at home! The last time I heard that was from Carra and the team in question was Benfica who went on to knock us out of the competition!! And what is this incestant refference about the crowd at anfield ??? How about we beat them at home by playing them off the park and then the crowd can come into it!!!
The loss to Chelski showed the holes and one important one is that we lack natural width when we use stevie on the right and zenden isn't good enough!! Stevie goes to the right in order to accomodate Alonso who hasn't been playing well for 18 months against a resiliant Chelski ... ???? WHY ... Pennant is finding form, scored a peach of a goal aginst em a few months ago and is on the bench ???? WHY .... I felt sorry for Alonso and Mash because they were made to look as though they couldn't cope but in truth the movement of the squad was shite so when they did get possession passing options were few and far between ... and for a player like Mascherano who is direct, it's very difficult for him to always play the negative back pass (unlike alonso) !! The battle was to be won in the middle and the selction let down his squad! 4-5-1 !! 2 players providing real cover for the back four and pacey wingers like Gonzales and Pennant to keep the chelsea wing backs at bay !! It's as simple as that but yet we are now 1 nil down against a team that is after the quadrouple .. fightting tooth and nail for it all!!
The lads need to get this destiny crap out there heads and realize warriors create thier destinys and it's as simple as that!
Yes its only 1 nil but they have strikers who can score and a real belief ... 1 goal at anfield and we'll need a miracle .... and I think the scouse God might be fresh out of em!!!!
True Tyron26
If they score one it's game over unless there's another miracle. Who ever gets 3 goals against Chelsea? Not even Barce. I remember Stevie G also saying we wouldn't go out to Benfica last year without a hell of a fight and we went out with a whimper really.
I think he was trying to convince his own teammates more than the fans.
I think we need to keep the game as tight as if we were 0-0 from the 1st leg. Yes, we need to score but we have 90 minutes to get 1 goal and that'll give us extra time. I remember Juventus-Real Madrid was the same scenario a few years ago and Juve got 1 goal inside 90 minutes and the winner in extra time. The key was they were patient and knew they ony needed 1 goal in 90 minutes so they didn't leave their defence wide open.
There's no point being gung-ho from the 1st minute and conceding a goal inside the first half because then we have no chance. Benitez went too gung-ho against Benfica at home last year and Simao punished us in the 1st half. Although Traore was playing centre back which made everyone nervous. We have a superb chance to win 1-0 in 90 minutes (I can't see 2-0 in 90 minutes), in extra time it's a lottery who wins it.
the return
we all know its goingto be hard but if we play like we can then we should score the only thing is if we score in the first 15 mins idont want them playing deep just booting the ball any were then panic sets in we need to be tight but at the same time we need to get forward as ateam not just one man up front kicking long balls ro crouch no zenden please and have fowler on the bench i know rafa likes work rate eg kuyt but sometimes it is not enough skill is required enter robbie we need somthink diffrent up front a little finesse i know this is a long shot but i would leave bell on the bench and have anderson the youngster play hes fast and because hes raw a surprize element no fear asspect i just wanna win whatever happens we are all in for a hell of a night
With 3 games left in the
With 3 games left in the league i'd like to see the likes of Paul Anderson and Craig Lindfield thrown into the Premiership action, it didn't do Michael Owen or Stevie G any harm and Owen was younger. As for next tuesday, I feel if we don't score in the first half we better start praying. I'm not a religious man, but if that is the scenario we'll need some devine intervention.
Definitely need to start
Definitely need to start using some of those FA youth cup winners alright. Nobody knows how good they will be until they are given a chance in the first team. They deserve a chance anyway and will have more passion for the shirt than the likes of Zenden and many other 1st teamers who have played in recent years.
Rafa has nothing to lose now by playing them. He shouldn't throw them all in together though; start one or two of the best ones and use a few as substitutes. They'll gain confidence if they win.
Tevez for Bellamy
I've always thought Bellamy was a good player but I've seen this year he hasn't the consistency or mentality for a club like Liverpool. He is a typical Newcastle player; he can be great on his day but is not interested more often than not week in week out.
Tevez looks to me a player we could get. He was supposedly a class player in Brazil for Corinthians and has done ok for West Ham, although it's hard to judge him there. He definitely has a creative technique which we badly need up front and he's quick enough.
But we'd also need a clinical goalscorer along with him because Kuyt and Crouch are bench boys in in my eyes. Our strike force is easily the worst part of our team. Without world class forwards you will struggle to win the biggest prizes against the very best clubs who do have class strikers.
VS Portsmouth
We were pathetic. We looked like a team fighting relegation. Even Watford beat them at home. I Know he (rafa) is trying to rest key players for Champs league vs Chelsea. But this is not the way to lose!! Why Alonso? He is also a key player. At least bring on a better striker or goalscorer like Kuyt(who looks pathetic in Champs League) on in the dying minutes, like about 88,89min for a kickabout.
dont u wish u had the arsenal reserves ?
Who cares c41 its not that big of a deal..i mean we had a crap team and we lost 2-1 where manure had their first team and also lost 2-1..pompey at home are rough just like bolton..when we played them at home we drew with them..dont underestimate them..they sound like a small club but they have experienced players..almost all of them are.
butter fingers.
What i don't understand is that Rafa Decided to play Dudek against pompey, despite his embarrassing display against Arsenal in the FA cup and Carling cup. The whole team are to blame for the loss but dudek was frighteningly bad!I only saw the the highlights on match of the day and he seems to be one half of the two main culprits, the other being Craig "offside" Bellamy, who has yet to show his "passion" for the club which he had spoken about. He is still the wingey little man we all remember from Newcastle.
dudek
yes dudek has lost heart and you cannot blame him from hero to villan istanbul to the bench we all know he is leaving they should play padelli the young reserve dudek will allways have a special place in all liverpool fans but benitez does not want him and he knows this his heart has allready left liverpool good look jersey you ll never walk a lone
HERO
Even though he has lost his heart and his place at Liverpool, and despite his recent embarrassments. Jerzey Dudek will always live on as a hero in the eyes of the fans. Rouman, your right he has left Liverpool already, in every possible way but physically and we will never forget what he did for us throughout the entire 2005 champions league campaign, the height of which came on the unforgetable, unbeatable night..... I can still see his face when he made that double wonder-save...He knew we would do it!
Dudek
Yes poor old Jersey Dudek has played his last game for Liverpool, I for one would like to say thanks for the heroic game that he played in Istanbul, you won us the game Jersey.
Good luck, you'll never walk alone....
As for Bellamy, when he first come to LFC I was excited, then again, I was when we signed Kewell, do us a favor Raffa, get as much as you can for em and bring in a class striker.
Dudek
Ok. He WAS good. He isn't now. In my point of view, he is a legend. BUT, Rafa made him a load of crap.(no offence)As I am a LFC fan, i would want Padelli to play more. Unless Reina's injured or suspended, we can have 2 rather not 1. Rafa, I think is partly to blame for Dudek's slump of form. Anyone agree?
And 1 more thing
Wish Gerrard and CO. to beat Chelsea.
dudek issue
Well yes he was the one who one us the trophy in istanbul ,but lets look at things early on.
The lad had great games with us in the league ,but when he let in two stupid united goals he lost it .Post CL..Reina is bought..dudek's uses are surplus...and when called upon he doesnt show the class he needs or the confidence he needs to be able to play in the first team...and c41 i agree that rafa has something to do with it but not all is rafas fault.
Carson is a better choice than padelli to be honest and wasnt there this player called amiliano or what not..what about him..is he still around.
Good luck jerzey in your pursue of a better life..the game against portsmouth really showed how bad he has become.
Todays the Day
Ok all you Liverpool Fans,
every one across Europe will be watching on T.V. tonight, so if you are lucky enough to be at Anfield (like me) sing your hearts out, show the RED men that we are the 12th man and up for the game.
Show Chavski and the Special One what TRUE SUPPORTERS ARE,.
Come on you Reds!!!
YNWA.
lets go
Unfortunately i won't be at Anfield tonight but I'll be sat at home watching the game with my flag and shirt. And I'll be cheering on the lads.
And as redpotter said we will Show Chavski and the Special One what TRUE SUPPORTERS ARE!!! so lets go!
COME ON YOU REDS!!!
YNWA
Just seen the team sheet Great Gerrard center but why Zendon again?
Zenden starts again!!! Ahhhh
I hate to see him play because he offers nothing!!
Reina
Reina is simply a better goal keeper than dudek. Rafa is not to blame for dudek's fall. He's was never that good in the first place, However is and always will be a legend in all our eyes, i'm sure of that! walk on dudek i wish you look what ever club you go to.
I disagree. Dudek started
I disagree. Dudek started off well at the club, but like so many other good goalkeepers that have passed through our ranks the coaching staff have let him down. I'm not blaming our current regime. It's simply the fault of past Goalkeeper coach Joe Corrigan and Gerard Houllier. David James has got better and more confident since leaving, Brad Friedle is now one of the best in the league, Sander Westerveld has disappeared now but at one stage was challenging for La Liga honours with Sociadad, Chris Kirkland although injury may have been a causing factor. The staff concentrated too much on getting him fit to play rather than teaching him how to play the game. Jerzy Dudek, made a couple of mistakes against Utd and was dropped, he wouldn't have got back in either if Kirkland wasn't so injury prone. Showed some solid performances over the years, most notably the 2003 League cup final against the Mancs. But Houllier, always being one to hold a grudge, never forgave him for that poor Utd performance, Dudek's confidence never really recovered from this period. It could have been so much sweeter for Jerzy and I think we all wish him well after sharing some happy memories from his time at Anfield.
