Liverpool after Nelson?

Liverpool are after Benfica right back Nelson, according to Skysports.
Nelson's agent has said that there are 2 clubs interested in signing him, but doesnt actually mention Liverpool's name :
"Two clubs are interested but the subject is down to Benfica,
"Now these clubs have decided to follow the work of Nelson and to speak at the end of the season." said Ulisses Santos.
If we were after this guy, then surely it would be before the end of the season? I know we need cover for Finnan, but, wouldn't it be January that we went for him?
Benfica have slapped a £17million price tag on him, so this move looks unlikely, as our main target over the summer was Daniel Alves from Seville, who wanted £12million for his services.

It would be a shame to see Finnan pushed to the bench if someone like Nelson came in.
Or would this guy be warming the bench.. £17m seems like a lot for that
Super Finnan
Steve Finnan is very much an unsung hero at Anfield. Rafa didn't know him when he came so tried to bring in Josemi at the back. But Steve fought off the challenge. Kromkamp came in as cover but Rafa knows Steve is his most consistant defender and eventually Kromkamp gave up because he couldn't get a look in. I do agree that we need cover but again £17 is too much for any defender never mind a bench warmer. Rafa's too cute for that. He has to sign player under Chelski's radar or Jose will just snap them up for twice what Liverpool will offer and ruin there careers. e.g. = Shaun Wright-Phillips (former England international) and Damien Duff (former wing wizard).

We had a chance to get Duff before he went to Newcastle, they must have been offering more money. I really doubt we will sign anyone for that sort of money, never mind a defender that not many people have heard of. Wright-Phillips was only ever going to go to Chelsea, again, that must have been money orientated, hes barely had a game for them , missed out on the England squad, and now he has to compete with the likes of Robben and Cole for a place.
kromkamp was never good enough to replace Finnan, if we are looking for a right sided player i think we have to get a proven player rather than another unknown. Kromkamp might have been good at Villareal, but the Spanish league is so much different to the Premiership (Morientes a perfect example, scoring again in La Liga for fun)
If Lucas Neill comes in i could see him going into the first team with Finnan being cover?

No chance. Finnan's the man at right back. He's without dought the best in the premiership. Neill is OK but I think he'd move to LFC knowing he'll be used in squad rotation/cover. He'd get his games against weaker league teams and cup games. He also has a bad disiplinary record if memory serves me right. But he is the best option out there to strengthen the squad and contend for more compititions. I think you've fallin in with this crowd that are underestimated Finnan's value to the team ;o)

No, i think Finnan has been great for us over the last few seasons, but i think that Rafa might try and get a replacement in sooner or later for him.

Yeah, of course. He's what, 31 now. So I reckon in 3 seasons he'd get pushed out. But at the moment and the next few seasons, barring injury, he's the best possible option. Lucas Neill wouldn't improve the first team. Maybe Zambrotta would???

Need a new finnan
Finnan is getting old.. We have to find a new right wing back. Someone who is young, fast and talent. Good in tackling, and great crosses. Dani Alves is our perfect man. Why wouldn't we pay only £12m for one of the best rigt wing backs in the world.

according to the Daily Mirror Chelsea are chasing Alves now. I think it's fairly obvious at this stage that Chelsea spot their Rivals' potential signings and swoop in with their millions.If this piece of transfer gossip is true £12mil will rise to £20mil and maybe more!I wonder if Rafa would compete against Chelsea to sign him at a high price or would he be too worried that Alves wouldn't settle in(?)

Seville wanted £12million from us and we would not pay it, i think if Chelsea go for him his price will inflate more. I doubt they are really after him, just media hype to get a story going.

firstly.....having just read this selection of comments.....
Duff was not sold to us because chelski wouldn't sell to a rival...we offered more money...fact
secondly....finnan...too old?? Are you having a laugh? He IS the best right back in the PREM and only gary neville comes close.....Alves is brilliant and probably better than either but Steve Finnan has done very little wrong for the past two years...very consistent

it is no secret that chavs are not happy at right back, maureen would delight in stealing him from under liverpools nose, especially after the deal looked done and dusted last summer... he will go to chelsea unfortunately
Palleta On the right???
If cover is really needed for finnan, why don't we try palleta on the right for at least two match, paletta don't show that he can really handle central defending position, so why don't we try him on the right, even Carragher started as lateral defender, so why not give a better chance to paleta before offloading him or wasting him on the bench!!!
